A sensational second half earned the Hope College men's basketball team a 72-68 win at unbeaten University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Wednesday.
The Flying Dutchmen shot 65 percent from the field after halftime that allowed them to overcome an 11-point deficit.
Hope raised its record to 2-1 following a third consecutive game against an opponent from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to open the season. It was the Flying Dutchmen's first road game as well.
Center Gabe Quillan (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) scored a team-high 18 points to lead four Flying Dutchmen in double figures.
The 6-9 sophomore netted 10 points during the second half, including a 3-pointer with 3 minutes, 42 seconds remaining that propelled Hope to a 69-62 lead.
Senior guard Evan Thomas (Okemos, Michigan / Okemos) and junior forward Tanner Wiegerink (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) chipped in 14 points apiece. Thomas also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Senior guard Clayton Dykhouse (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) added 10 points.
Thomas gave the Flying Dutchmen their first lead of the second half at 50-49 on a jumper with 13:38 remaining.
Whitewater (2-1) pulled even on three different occasions, but Hope never relinquished the lead.
The Flying Dutchmen shot 13-of-20 from the field and 13-of-15 from the foul line during the second half.
Forward Carter Capstran led three Warhawks in double figures with 22 points. Whitewater shot 32.1 percent from the field during the second half.
Hope's next game is Saturday, Nov. 19, at 5 p.m. at DeVos Fieldhouse against North Park University (Ill.).
