Randolph Men Outlast Greensboro 87-83

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's basketball team hosted Greensboro on Saturday afternoon at Giles Gymnasium. The WildCats saw their double-digit lead drop to single digits late in the second half but were able to hang on and defeat the Pride 87-83.

Randolph led 9-2 just over four minutes into the first half. Greensboro closed to with four points at one point, 11-7, with 14:20 showing on the game clock. The WildCats used an 8-1 run to jump ahead 19-8 at 11:40. The Randolph advantage pushed to 15 points, 26-11, with 9:15 remaining in the period. Greensboro closed to within eight points, 32-24, at 6:17. The WildCats used a 14-1 run to break away and take its biggest lead of the afternoon, 45-24, with just under three minutes to play in the half. Randolph still had a significant lead at 16 points, 47-31, at halftime.

Randolph maintained its double-digit lead for almost half of the second period. The WildCats were ahead 59-43 with just under 15 minutes to play in the half. The Pride then went on a 14-4 run to cut the deficit to single digits at six points, 63-57, at 9:26. The WIldCats restored its lead back to double-digits to 16 points, 80-64, with 3:26 remaining. A 15-1 Pride run again brought the deficit down to single digits at two points with 32 ticks left. In the end, the WildCats made all six free throws they were granted to hold off the Pride comeback.

Overall, Randolph was 27-of-56 (48.2%) from the floor and made 6-of-15 shots (40%) from beyond the three point arc. The WildCats were also efficient from the charity stripe as they converted 27-of-36 (75%).

The 'Cats had a slight edge in the paint with a 42-34 advantage. Randolph also led in points off turnovers 20-15.

Danny Bickey (Beckley, W.V./Woodrow Wilson) scored a career-best 34 points which are the third-most points scored by a WildCat in a game. He was 10-of-17 shooting and 4-of-6 in three-point attempts. He added six rebounds. Jerry Goodman (Suffolk, Va./Portsmouth Christian School) put up 20 points on 6-of-15 shooting. Hunter Verling (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary) was a point and rebound shy of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Jordan Phillips-McLoyd (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) also had nine points. Joseph Peters (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) finished with seven points and six rebounds.

Randolph hosts William Peace on Wednesday night. Game time is at 7:30 p.m. following the women's game.
