BIDDEFORD, Maine – Senior Trey Carrier (Wilton, N.H.) had a record-setting night with 45 points and 15 field goals made as the ninth-seeded Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team rolled to a 93-73 win over eighth-seeded University of New England in an opening round contest of the 2022 Commonwealth Coast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament.

Carrier's 45 points eclipses the previous mark of 39, set by Jason Ganley on Jan. 19, 2016, while his 15 field goals made breaks the previous mark of 14 set twice, most recently by Carmino DeMercurio on Nov, 22, 2003. Additionally, he grabbed 10 rebounds to record his 11th double-double of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Wentworth erased an early, 3-0 deficit when senior Kyle Henseler (Coventry, R.I.) and freshman Tyler Stewart (East Taunton, Mass.) each made layups within 24 seconds of each other. UNE regained the lead when senior Anthony Sesesombath (Newmarket, N.H.) answered with a jumper before Carrier scored four straight to give Wentworth an 8-5 lead with 16:12 left. The Nor'Easters scored five straight as senior Mark Relia (Dedham, Mass.) made a layup and senior Drake Gavin (Old Lyme, Conn.) hit a three.
• Carrier countered with a three of his own which started a 14-3 run and gave the Leopards a 22-13 lead after junior Tommy Dooling (Mansfield, Mass.) hit a three with 10:33 left. After graduate student Avery DeBrito (New Bedford, Mass.) made a jumper, Wentworth went on a 14-2 run with Carrier scoring eight of those points and took a 36-17 lead with 6:21 left.
• Graduate student Alex Kravchuk (Mansfield, Conn.) hit a three just 16 seconds later but the Black & Gold closed out the first half on a 20-4 run and took a 56-24 lead at the break. Carrier had the last six points of the half, including a three at the buzzer to give him 29 points in the first 20 minutes. As a team the Leopards shot 59.5 percent from the floor.
• The Nor'Easters outscored the Leopards 26-11 over the first nine minutes of the second half and cut the lead to 17 on a Kravchuk layup. However, Carrier followed with a jumper and Henseler made a three, pushing the margin back above 20. UNE got as close as 17 on a pair of Relia free throws with 8:04 left but Wentworth built its lead back to as many as 23.
• Carrier finished the game 15-for-27 from the floor. Dooling was the only other Leopard to score in double figure, tallying 10. Stewart and Henseler each had nine.
• Three Nor'Easters finished in double figures, including Kravchuk who scored 17. Dranke added 16 and Senesombath had 13. Wentworth shot 50.8 percent from the floor and had a 50-35 rebounding advantage.

NOTEWORTHY:

• The Leopards scored 90 or more points for the second time this season and are now 6-0 when scoring 80 or more points.

SERIES NOTES:

• Tonight was the 45th all-time meeting between the two teams. Wentworth leads the all-time series 29-16 and snapped a three-game series losing streak. In postseason play, the Leopards now lead, 2-1.

NEXT UP:

• Wentworth visits top-seeded Nichols tomorrow night in a CCC Quarterfinal at 7:00 p.m. The teams split the regular season meetings, with each team winning on its home court (Wentworth, 95-79, on Dec. 7; Nichols 84-77 on Feb. 5. This will be the sixth postseason meeting between the two teams (first since 2017) with Wentworth leading, 4-1.
