• The Short Story:   The 19th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's basketball team jumped out to a 17-4 lead just over five minutes into the game and never looked back in a 78-48 win over visiting Franklin & Marshall Tuesday evening.

How it Happened

• In a game the Blue Jays never trailed, five different players scored in the opening 17-4 run that put the game away early.  Tom Quarry scored seven of his nine first-half points during the opening surge and he, Braeden Johnson and Conner Delaney all hit three-pointers before the game was six minutes old.
• After Quarry's early offense, it was Delaney who helped put the margin to 34-11 as he dropped seven of his 10 first-half points in a 17-7 surge that gave the Blue Jays the 23-point lead with 7:33 to play in the first half.  His 26-footer capped the spree and the Blue Jays never let the lead dip below 20 over the final 27 minutes of the game.
• The Diplomats closed the first half by outscoring the Blue Jays 15-13 over the final seven minutes to make it a 47-26 game at the half.  Kane Feudtner fueled the late surge for the Diplomats as he scored all seven of his first-half points in the final seven minutes.
• Any hopes for a Diplomat comeback were dashed in the first three minutes of the second half as Delaney dropped in a three and Quarry had back-to-back dunks to push the lead to 54-28.
• Hopkins answered a Solomon Mathias bucket in the paint with an 18-5 spurt that saw the Jays' lead swell to 37 with 8:39 to play. The Blue Jays spread the offense around as seven players combined for the 18 points in a spurt that spanned nearly six minutes. F&M made a late push, outscoring Hopkins 13-6 down the stretch, but the damage was already done.

What it Means

• Johns Hopkins improves to 17-3 overall and 13-2 in the Centennial Conference. With Swarthmore's loss to Ursinus, Hopkins takes over sole possession of first place in the conference with three games to play.
• This is the second straight season the Blue Jays have won 17 of their first 20 games.
• The 30-point margin of victory is the largest for Johns Hopkins in the 110-game series history.  The previous record of 21 points had been set in a 63-42 win in 2001.
