WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's basketball team racked up 64 points during the first half as the Red and Black never looked back en route to a 99-74 victory over visiting Franciscan University of Steubenville in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game Wednesday evening.
W&J converted an astonishing 77.1 percent from the field (27-of-35) in the first half versus the Barons. W&J moves to 15-4 overall and 10-2 in PAC play. This marks just the 13th time in program history and the first time since the 2008-09 season that the Red and Black have reached 15 wins.
The loss drops Franciscan to 6-11 overall and 4-7 in league play. The victory gave W&J a sweep of the regular season series. W&J won at Franciscan by a 91-67 margin on Jan. 6.
Five Presidents scored in double-figures. Sophomore Isaiah Langston (Coraopolis, Pa./Cornell) and junior Dirk Daniels (Phillipsburg, N.J./Blair Academy) led the Presidents with 16 apiece. Langston converted all seven of his field goal attempts while the 16 points establishes a new career high for Daniels.
Michael Bigley (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle) finished with 14 points all of which came in the first half. Kyran Mitchell (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) added 11 points and seven rebounds while Alexander Skowron (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) finished with 10 points off the bench.
The two teams exchanged scores for the first three-plus minutes before Franciscan opened up an 11-8 advantage. W&J responded with an 18-6 run to take a 26-17 lead at the 12:01 mark. A three-point lead by Mitchell opened up the run. DiVito accounted for five straight points before Langston closed the run with a layup of his own. Less than four minutes later, consecutive three-point field goals by Langston and J.R. Mazza (Bridgeport, W.Va./University) swelled the lead to 46-26 with 8:56 to play before halftime.
A layup in the paint by Daniels with 48 seconds to play gave W&J its largest lead of the first half at 25. W&J led by a 64-41 margin at the break.
W&J led by at least 20 points for the entirety of the second half. The lead grew as large as 32 as the Red and Black finished off its third straight win. A made field goal by Nevan Campalong (Sewickley, Pa./Ambridge) ended the game with a final of 99-74.
Aidan Hickey and Sean Hickey were the only Barons to score in double figures. Aidan scored 16 while Sean finished with 14.
W&J held advantages in points in the paint (68-36). Both teams committed 26 turnovers in a matchup of two fast-paced full-court pressure styles.
