NEW YORK – The nationally ranked No. 6 Yeshiva University men's basketball team earned its 10th conference victory in as many league games played (17-1 overall), on Thursday evening, as YU earned an 82-66 victory over U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Max Stern Athletic Center.
History was made as senior Ryan Turell surpassed Yeshiva Maccabees Hall of Famer Yossy Gev ('02) for first place on YU's All-Time Scoring List. Turell now has 1,882 career points, the most in school history. The Los Angeles native officially became the school's all-time scoring leader by taking a feed from graduate student Ethan Lasko and burying a 3-point shot to extend the Macs' lead to 48-35, just 3:42 into the second half. That shot increased Turell's career total to 1,872 points. Gev scored 1,871 points during his illustrious collegiate career and was on top of YU's All-Time Scoring List for 20 years.
"I want to thank all my teammates," Turell told MacsLive. "Simcha Halpert really took a step back and embraced me during my freshman year. Gabriel Leifer, Dani Katz - they all helped me succeed and helped me get to where I got to. At the end of the day, we chase letters not numbers. We are trying to win a national championship and get every 'W' we can. That is the name of the game."
For the evening, Turell scored 31 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out four assists. The school's all-time leading scorer shot 12-for-23 from the field.
"What Ryan has accomplished in a short time is incredible and a testament to the hours of hard work he puts into becoming better every day," Yeshiva University Head Coach Elliot Steinmetz said. "Couldn't be prouder to be a witness."
Turell's teammates also played big roles in securing another conference win for the Maccabees. Graduate student Gabriel Leifer tallied his second consecutive double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, while also distributing five assists, forcing four steals, and blocking a pair of shots. Fellow graduate student Jordan Armstrong scored 10 points, brought down six rebounds, blocked three shots, and dished out a pair of assists. Lasko had 11 points, going 6-for-6 from the free throw line, while distributing six assists and collecting four steals. Junior Ofek Reef had 11 points, while classmate Matan Zucker finished with six points and three boards.
Yeshiva led the game from wire-to-wire. The Maccabees were up by as many as 21 points in the first half. In the second half, however, the Mariners (10-8, 7-4 Skyline) chipped away at their deficit. A free throw by senior Blaine McDonough pulled the visiting team to within 10, at 45-35, with 16:40 still to play in regulation time. However, Turell's historic 3-point field goal that put him No. 1 on YU's All-Time Scoring List also extended the Macs' lead to 13.
Later in the half, a 6-0 Yeshiva run, capped off by a jump shot from Armstrong, inflated the Blue and White's hold to 70-50 with 7:08 remaining in regulation time. USMMA rallied to pull to within 11, at 74-63, with 2:19 left, but it was not enough. Yeshiva was able to build its lead back up to 16, with Turell finishing it off with a layup with 33 ticks left, to help YU earn its 17th victory of the season and remain undefeated in conference play.
Yeshiva will battle Sarah Lawrence College, in a Skyline matchup at Campbell Sports Center, on Thursday evening. The game is scheduled to being at 8:00 p.m.
