Anthony Owns ODAC Assist Mark as #1 R-MC Men’s Hoops Wins at Randolph

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Senior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had 12 assists and broke the ODAC record for career assists with 685 as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team registered a 77-43 victory at Randolph on Tuesday evening in ODAC action.

How it Happened:

  • Junior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) had the first basket of the game before the Wildcats scored the next three points to take the lead. Another layup by Mallory put the Yellow Jackets back on top before a triple and a layup by Randolph gave the home team an 8-4 edge five minutes into the contest. The Wildcats had a 12-9 lead before senior Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) tied it with a three-pointer and made a layup and another trey to give the Yellow Jackets a 17-12 advantage with 11:15 left in the first half. A triple by freshman Vincent Payne (Frederick, Md./St. Maria Goretti) pushed the lead to eight at 20-12 with 11 minutes remaining. R-MC was up 26-18 before five straight by the Wildcats pulled them within three at 26-23. Junior Loginn Norton (Chesterfield, Va./James River) buried a trey, Anthony had a layup, Robertson hit a triple, Mallory made a layup and sophomore Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) sank a free throw to make up an 11-0 run as R-MC took a 37-23 lead with 30 seconds left. Randolph had the final basket of the half from behind the arc as the Yellow Jackets led 37-26 at intermission. Robertson had 11 points and Mallory added eight. R-MC had 15 field goals and 15 assists.
  • R-MC scored the first five points of the second half, all by Mbangue, as the visitors went up 42-26 with 15:45 left. Norton nailed a three-pointer to give the Yellow Jackets a 20-point lead at 53-33 with 11:45 remaining. A layup by Anthony made it 55-33 midway through the second half. A layup by Mallory made the margin two dozen at 59-35 with eight minutes left. A pair of free throws by Mbangue put R-MC on top 66-35 with 4:40 remaining. Sophomore Will Coble (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) hit a three-pointer and junior Noah Lindsay (Moseley, Va./Benedictine) put in a follow at the buzzer to make the final 77-43.

By The Numbers:

  • Anthony finished with 12 assists to give him 685 for his career, passing the ODAC record of 680 by Tim Crawford of Eastern Mennonite from 1977-81.
  • The Yellow Jackets had three players score in double figures. Robertson finished with 15, Mallory scored 14 and Mbangue had 10.
  • R-MC had a 49-28 advantage on the glass. Senior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) pace the Yellow Jackets with nine, while Mbangue grabbed six.
  • The Yellow Jackets finished with 30 field goals and had 25 assists. Along with 12 assists by Anthony, Mbangue delivered a career-high six.
  • The R-MC defense held Randolph to 43 points, including 17 in the second half. It was the lowest point total for the Yellow Jackets this season.

  • R-MC extended its win streak to 12.
  • The Yellow Jackets have won eight straight against the Wildcats.
  • Over the past four seasons, R-MC is 85-7 overall (.924) and 43-2 in ODAC contests (.956).
  • Mallory's one block gives him 150 for his career, the second-highest total in program history. Pat Holland owns the school record with 174.
  • Anthony had two steals to give him 219 for his career, a program record.
  • Anthony had nine points to give him 1,738 for his career, passing Jack Whitcomb to move into fourth place on R-MC's all-time scoring list.
