Morris Keys Win for #1 R-MC Men’s Hoops at H-SC

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Senior DaQuan Morris (Philadelphia, Pa./Hill School) hit seven three-pointers for a career-high 21 points as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team closed the game on a 40-13 run over the final 15 minutes for an 83-63 ODAC win at Hampden-Sydney on Thursday evening.

How it Happened:

  • The Tigers scored the first four points of the game before senior Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) nailed a trey to put the Yellow Jackets on the board. Sophomore Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) had two free throws to give R-MC its first lead and his layup tied the game at 7-7 with 17:30 left in the first half. H-SC put up the next five points before consecutive three-pointers by Morris gave the Yellow Jackets a 13-12 edge with just under 13 minutes remaining. The Tigers would use a 14-4 run to take their largest lead at 26-17 with 7:10 left. A jumper in the paint by junior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) and a pair of free throws by senior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made up a 4-1 spurt as the visitors cut the deficit to six at 27-21 with 5:30 remaining. H-SC pushed the lead back to nine at 32-23 before a layup by junior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) and two more treys by Morris made it a one-point game at 32-31 with 1:10 left. The Tigers would tally the final two buckets of the half and take a 36-31 lead at the break. Morris led all scorers with 12 points, while Anthony delivered four assists.
  • H-SC scored four of the first six points in the second half before a pair of triples by Anthony pulled R-MC within one at 40-39 with 17:20 remaining. The Yellow Jackets trailed 44-43 before the Tigers banked in a trey and hit a second three-pointer to push the lead back to seven at 50-43. Morris, sophomore Will Coble (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) and sophomore Lance Johnson (South Riding, Va./Freedom) each had two treys in a 22-6 run as R-MC took a 65-56 lead with 6:50 left. H-SC closed within six at 67-61 before Anthony scored seven and Mallory added six as the Yellow Jackets scored 16 straight points to go ahead 83-61 before posting the 83-63 win. R-MC outscored H-SC 40-13 over the final 15 minutes.

By The Numbers:

  • The Yellow Jackets had three players score in double figures. Morris had 21, going 7 for 9 from beyond the arc. Mallory had 20, including 16 in the second half. Anthony finished with 15 and had 13 after halftime.
  • R-MC shot 50% from the floor (31-62). The Yellow Jackets shot 38% from the floor in the first half (11-29) and 61% in the second half (20-33).
  • The Yellow Jacket defense held H-SC to 40% from the floor (23-58), including 28% in the second half (8-29).

  • Mallory's three blocks give him 145 for his career, the second-highest total in program history. Pat Holland owns the school record with 174.
  • Anthony had nine assists to give him 670 in his career, the second-highest total in program history and the second-highest total in ODAC history.
  • Anthony had 15 points to give him 1,709 for his career, the fourth-highest total in program history.
