Twins combine for 58 points as Hood shoots past Stevenson

FREDERICK, Md. - The brother duo of Mason and Evan Wang combined for 58 points as the Hood College men's basketball picked up its fifth straight win, 110-78 over visiting Stevenson in MAC Commonwealth play. 

Inside the Numbers

  • Mason Wang finished with a game-high 33 points on 11-of-18 shooting with four 3-pointers. It was his second straight 30-plus point game and fourth such game of the year.
  • Evan Wang added 25 points, all in the second half, and reached 1,100 points in his career. He hit 9-for-12 from the field, including 5-for-7 from 3-point distance, to go along with five assists. His big second half came after Mason Wang scored 22 in the first half. 
  • Soren Almquist came off the bench for a career-high 12 points on 4-of-6 from 3-point distance.
  • Trumaine Strickland grabbed a team-high six rebounds. 

How it Happened

  • Hood led 17-16 before a 16-6 run that featured two Almquist 3-pointers stretched the lead to 33-22 with 4:41 left in the first half. 
  • Khalil Richard scored six straight points to ignite an 11-1 spurt for the Mustangs that made it 34-32 with 1:44 to go. The rest of the period belonged to Hood, however, as the Blazers scored 14 points in the final 83 seconds, the last six by Mason Wang, to make it 48-34 at halftime. 
  • Hood pushed the lead to 19 after an and-one by Wang just over a minute into the second half, 54-35. 
  • Davon Jones eventually pulled the Mustangs within 10, 81-71, with 7:29 left.
  • The Blazers held Stevenson to only 2-for-11 shooting from that point on, closing the game with a resounding 29-8 run. Evan Wang scored nine points in the run and Will Spencer had eight.    

Analysis

  • Hood shot 64 percent in the second half to finish the game at 58 percent.
  • The Blazers hit a season-best 19 3-point field goals, two shy of the school record, and connected on 51 percent from behind the arc. The marksmanship allowed Hood to record another season-high with 23 assists. 
  • Stevenson hit 47 percent overall and 8-for-24 from 3-point range. 
  • Hood held a 28-8 edge in points off turnovers and 15-4 edge in second chance points, despite being outrebounded 33-29. 

For the Opponent

  • Khalil Richard scored 28 to lead the Mustangs. 
  • Cameron Smith added 20 points and Jalen Jacox finished with 11.

Notes

  • With the win, the Blazers improved to 12-5 overall and 9-1 in the MAC Commonwealth. 
  • It was the most points for Hood since scoring 111 against Stevenson in January 2020. 
  • Stevenson's record slipped to 9-7 and 5-5 in the conference.
