Mason Wang scores 32 as Hood wins fourth in a row

CHESTER, Pa. - Mason Wang scored 24 of his game-high 32 points in the second half and the Hood College men's basketball team closed the game with a 23-10 run to defeat Widener on the road 82-71. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Wang had his third 30-point game of the year, hitting 7-of-10 from 3-point range and 9-for-10 at the free throw line. He also led the Blazers with seven rebounds and six steals. The senior became the first player in program history with over 1,700 points and became the second to make 400 career free throws. 
  • Bryce Butler and Evan Wang scored 16 points. Butler was a perfect 4-for-4 on 3-point tries and hit all four his free throws. Wang had five assists and sank 4-of-4 at the foul line. 

How it Happened

  • The Blazers led by a dozen after layup by Mason Wang with 16:03 left, 49-37, before Widener came storming back. With 9:08 on the clock, Kenny Lewis grabbed an offensive rebound and made the put back while falling to the floor to cap a 19-5 run and gave the Pride a 56-54 lead. 
  • Hood had made just one of its last 10 field goals during run, but Wang broke the drought with a 3-pointer on the Blazers' next possession. There were three more lead changes in the next minute. Butler hit back-to-back 3-point shots in a span of 28 seconds to put Hood ahead 65-61 with 7:10 left in the game. 
  • Butler's long distance shooting ignited Hood's 23-10 run and Wang scored 11 of the Blazers' last 19 points. 
  • Hood still led by just two, 68-66, when Wang hit a 3-pointer from over 25 feet away with 3:15 remaining as the Blazers hit all four of their field goals and all four of their free throws from that point on to pull away. 
  • Widener opened the game with a 7-2 run which was erased by a 10-1 run for Hood, resulting in a 12-8 lead for the Blazers after an Evan Wang field goal with 11:53 to go. Kevin Schenk reclaimed the lead for the Pride with a 3-point field goal to make it 16-15 at 10:15. Wang responded immediately with a jumper to give Hood the lead and start a 17-3 run to make the score 32-19 after Garrison Linton's 3-pointer with 4:29 left in the half. 
  • Hood led 39-29 at halftime. 

Analysis

  • Hood hit 15-of-30 from 3-point range (50 percent), while Widener was 12-for-28. 
  • At the free throw line, the Blazers made their first 15 attempts of the game and finished 19-of-21 (91 percent). 
  • Hood had 11 steals in the game, compared to only three for the Pride, resulting in a 20-9 edge in fast break points for the Blazers. 

Notes

  • Hood swept the season series from Widener and is 11-5 overall and 8-1 in the MAC Commonwealth. The start is the Blazers' best in conference action since beginning the Capital Athletic Conference slate 9-1 in 2006-07. 
  • The Pride dipped to 7-10 overall and 2-7 in the league.
