COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - No. 11 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball tied a Centennial Conference for consecutive regular season wins in league play with a 78-61 victory over Ursinus College on Wednesday night. The Garnet improve to 15-1 and 9-0 in conference, while the Bears fall to 8-5 and 5-3.
It was exactly three years ago on January 19th, 2019, that the Garnet last lost a regular season game in Centennial Conference play... and that loss came at the hands of Ursinus. The Bears beat Swarthmore, 94-88 in Collegeville, Pa.
Ursinus opened the game by scoring the first four points, but Swarthmore quickly responded. The Garnet scored the next ten points behind baskets from Ryan Ingram, George Corzine, Conor Harkins and George Visconti. With less than five minutes remaining in the half, Justin Tucket hit back to back jumpers to give Swarthmore a slight 33-29 edge. Harkins hit a three with 1:11 left in the half to tie the game at 38 prior to the break. It was only the second time this season that Swarthmore has been tied or trailing at the half-time break (vs. Widener, 41-38, on 11/20/2021).
Aidan Godfrey hit a fast break three point shot with 8:42 left in the game to give Swarthmore a 61-51 lead. It was the first double-digit lead of the game for either team. A minute later, Ingram found Harkins for another fast break three point basket. A jumper by Visconti extended the Garnet lead, and Godfrey would follow to score the next six points as Swarthmore took a 72-55 lead.
The Garnet shot 83.3% from the free throw line and out rebounded the Bears 51-33.
Harkins led the Garnet with 17 points, and shot five-of-seven from distance. The senior added three boards and an assist in the league contest. Godfrey finished the game with 13 pints and ten rebounds, as the forward recorded his first collegiate double-double. Caprise added a game-high 16 rebounds and six points, while Corzine finished the contest with six points and three rebounds. Tucker scored eight points in eight minutes of action off of the bench. Matt Mulvey finished the game with six points and Ingram added five.
Swarthmore returns to the court on Saturday as they travel to Carlisle, Pa. to take on Dickinson College (3-8, 2-4 CC). Tip-off for the Centennial Conference game is slated for 3:00 p.m.
