MADISON, NJ (January 19, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University men's basketball team rallied back from a 12-point second-half deficit Wednesday evening at host Drew University, eventually taking the lead with two seconds left on two Danny Frauenheim free throws to steal a 76-74 road victory over the Rangers in Landmark Conference action from Baldwin Gym.

With 13:49 to play in the game, SU took a three-point lead at 55-52 edge after a free throw on a technical foul by junior Dominic Dunn. From that point, the host Rangers (10-6, 4-1 Landmark Conference) went on a 15-0 run capped by a free throw by Michael Kane with 8:50 remaining in the contest. The River Hawks (11-4, 3-1 Landmark) slowly started to chip away at the Drew lead, making it a one-score game with 1:40 to go after a triple from senior Lukas Yurasits

Drew responded with a lay-up on its next possession by Malcolm Newman to make the score 74-69 with a minute to play, but senior guard Jay Martin nailed a three-pointer off a feed from Yurasits to trim the Ranger lead to 74-72. Drew would miss the front end of a one-and-one with 40 seconds remaining, and Dunn connected on a turn-around jumper from the left elbow to tie the game at 74 with 20 seconds left.

On the ensuing inbounds play, Drew was fouled but once again missed the first free throw on a one-and-one, giving the ball back to Susquehanna. With eight seconds left, Frauenheim was fouled though the hosts were not at the limit yet, prompting a timeout by head coach Frank Marcinek. After taking the inbounds, Frauenheim drove to the hoop and was fouled with two seconds remaining, sinking both freebies to put SU up 74-72.

Drew would heave the ball down court with 2.3 seconds left, but the pass was knocked out by SU to give the Rangers the ball in the front court with a chance to tie or win the game. After a timeout by the hosts, a three-pointer by Drew went off the front rim to give the win to the River Hawks.

Dunn finished with a team-leading 21 points, making 8-of-12 from the field while connecting on 4-of-6 from deep. Dunn also posted six boards in a season-high 38 minutes of action. Yurasits went 5-of-9 from the floor, finishing with 14 points while Martin also finished with 14 points and six rebounds as a reserve. Frauenheim filled the stat sheet with 11 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals, making his only two free throws of the game in the most crucial of spots.

Another big performance for SU came in the form of Jack Van Syckle, who tallied career highs in minutes (33) and rebounds (7), while also setting a season-bests with six points and two blocks. The River Hawks shot 48.3 percent (29-60) from the floor, making 11-of-22 (50 percent) from behind the arc. Despite only getting seven free throws all game, SU made the most of them by sinking all seven.

David Gervase scored a game-high 23 points for Drew, hitting 6-of-14 from three-point land, while Newman and Lybrant Robinson each registered 15 points. McBurnie, Jr. logged another double-double for Drew with 10 points and 12 rebounds, as the Rangers finished at 51.8 percent from the floor. Free throw shooting hurt Drew down the stretch, going 3-of-7 in the second half and 6-of-12 overall.

The Rangers led for the majority of the first half, but Susquehanna did take a lead at 7:28 of the first period after a triple from first-year Cooper Haberern. SU held onto the lead until the last possession of the opening 20 minutes, as Robinson made a jumper at the buzzer to give DU a 39-38 lead at halftime. The game featured 20 lead changes overall, and eight tie scores including six in the second half. Susquehanna has now won back-to-back games in Madison by a combined margin of five points.
