IMMACULATA, PA - No. 18 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball closed out 2021 in style with a 80-57 victory over Immaculata University on Thursday.
The Garnet improve to 8-1, while the Mighty Macs drop to 3-8 on the season. Thursday's game was the first time the two non-conference programs met on the hardwood.
Vinny DeAngelo scored the first five points for the Garnet. Swarthmore opened up the game with a 7-2 lead, before stretching the game to a 19-6 lead. DeAngelo, Michael Caprise, Colin Shaw, Matt Mulvey and George Visconti contributed with baskets during that run. Later the opening half, the Garnet held a lead as large as 19 points. Muvley's layup from Shaw gave the visiting team the 19-point lead with 5:46 remaining. Immaculata closed the final five minutes of the first half on a 13-4 run as Swarthmore went into the locker room with a 38-28 lead.
Conor Harkins knocked down a three-pointer for Swarthmore's opening bucket of the second half. Mid-way though the half, the Garnet and Mighty Macs exchanged baskets. Swarthmore began to pull away as Caprise, Harkins and DeAngelo recorded buckets in a Garnet 8-0 run. Caprise got it started with a fast break layup and a defensive rebound. Harkins hit a fast break triple and Caprise added a block and rebound on the next defensive possession. DeAngleo capped off the run with another three-pointer to give Swarthmore a 21-point lead.
DeAngelo scored a career-high 33 points and added six boards and three steals in the non-conference contest. Visconti added 17 points and Harkins recorded 10 points. Caprise finished the game with six points and 11 rebounds, while Mulvey, Ryan Ingram and George Corzine each tallied four points. The Garnet recorded 21 fast break points and held Immaculata to 37.5% shooting from the field.
Swarthmore returns to the court in the new year with a contest against Stevens on January 2nd. The College's COVID-19 Planning Group reached this decision in consultation with medical and public health experts.
