No. 21 Rensselaer Suffers First Loss of the Season

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - Senior Mason Memmelaar had a double-double of 18 points and 13 points, but the No. 21 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team dropped its first game of the season, losing 59-46 to Oswego State in the first round of the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament.

The Engineers, who are now 8-1, held a 13-12 lead on a Memmelaar jumper with 12:26 remaining in the first half, but the Lakers went on an 11-0 run for a 23-13 edge with 4:10 to play. Memmelaar broke the string with a pair of free throws, but a three-pointer from Christian Simmons 1:08 later put Oswego up by 11 points, 26-15. RPI eventually cut its deficit to seven points, 29-22, on a pair of free throws from Jonny Angbazo that closed the scoring in the frame.

A Devin Green trey to begin the second half gave the Lakers at 10-point lead, but Cam Bleibtrey (2 points) and Angbazo (4) answered to make it a four-point margin, 32-28. Following three straight Oswego points, Memmelaar scored five consecutive points to make the score 35-33 with 12:35 to play. The Lakers countered with six straight points and held at least a two-possession lead the rest of the game. 

A forward, Memmelaar made 7 of 17 shots from the field and 3 of 5 free throws. Two of his rebounds came on the offensive end and he added two assists, a block and a steal in 34 minutes. Will Rubin, a junior guard, also reached double digits in scoring with 10 points, while Bleibtrey had nine points and Angbozo tallied six.

Julien Crittendon led three from Oswego in double figures with 13 points, including 7 of 7 from the free throw line. The Lakers, who are among the schools receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, improve to 8-1 and face St. John Fisher, the host of the tournament, in the championship game at 3pm on Thursday.

RPI plays Medaille in the consolation game at 1pm.
