HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. -- The Marymount University men's basketball team wrapped up the calendar year with a high-scoring affair against Centenary University on Tuesday evening, as the Saints rolled to a 107-86 victory.
Marymount pieced together an offensive showcase in its Atlantic East Conference opener and led from tip-off to the final whistle. MU finished the game with a 56.6% mark from the floor (43-for-76) and drained 13 shots from beyond the three-point arc. On the opposite end of the court, the Saints tallied nine steals and forced Centenary into 18 turnovers. The defensive pressure served Marymount well, as it translated into 26 points.
The Saints started strong as sophomore Wyatt Hockenberry tallied a 3-pointer and a layup in the first minute of the game. Marymount continued its barrage and doubled-up the Cyclones with the score at 22-11 after a 3-point make from Marcus Stubbs. Centenary attempted to fight back before the end of the half, but a fast break bucket from Montell Cooper off of a feed from Nick Rivas.
MU kept its foot on the gas in the second half with a 50% (19-for-38) field-goal percentage. Cooper scored 12 of his team-high 20 points during the frame to keep the Cyclones at bay. As time wound down, the Blue and White pushed their lead to 30 at 101-71 after a three from Rivas. The Saints cruised for the last five minutes, as a pair of free throws from Miles Brown settled the contest's scoreline.
Outside of his scoring antics, Cooper added five boards, four assists, and two steals. Stubbs finished just behind his classmate on the stat sheet with 17 points. Senior Xavier Reaves registered his third consecutive double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Hockenberry, Brown, and Rivas rounded out MU's double-digit scorers. Hockenberry finished with 14 points, while Brown and Rivas each chipped in 11. Senior Roey Stern tallied a game-best six assists.
The Saints are back on the court on Sunday, January 2, at Penn State Harrisburg. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
