COLLEGEVILLE, PA (December 21, 2021) -- The Susquehanna University men's basketball team had six players in double figures, winning a wild, high-scoring affair 117-111 on the road at Ursinus College Tuesday in non-conference action.
The 117 points were the most in a game for the River Hawks (7-3) since a 120-116 double overtime win to Misericordia in 2016. It was the most points in regulation for a Susquehanna team since the 2014-15 team scored 122 points against Goucher in February of 2015. It was also the second time this season that SU has scored over 100 points in a game, tallying 111 at Elizabethtown College December 4.
On the other end, the 111 points allowed marked the first time since January 6, 2018 at Moravian College SU allowed 100 points in a game, and the 111 points in a victory were the most going back at least until 2000. For the first time this season, Susquehanna put six players in double-figures, led by the career-high 24 points from senior Jay Martin.
The first half was close early until the River Hawks took an 18-10 lead at 15:09 of the opening stanza after a lay-up by Quincy Haughton. The Susquehanna edge hovered around eight until Ursinus went on a 13-2 spurt to take a 27-24 lead with 10:13 to play in the first half. Neither team would lead by more than one possession over the last eight minutes, as the teams went to the half deadlocked at 47.
After the intermission, Susquehanna came out of the locker room and took the game's largest lead at nine less than five minutes into the half after a pair of free throws by Haughton. UC didn't go away, trimming the SU advantage down to two with 13 minutes left, but a 7-0 run by the River Hawks pushed their lead into double figures for the first time at 78-67.
Susquehanna's lead got up to as much as 14 points, as the River Hawks' edge hovered around 10 points until a minute to go. Back-to-back threes from the Bears made it a four-point game with 1:06 to play, followed by a layup by Trevor Wall for Ursinus with 48 seconds left made it a one-score game.
The next possession was huge, as Haughton took a nice feed from senior Danny Frauenheim and drilled a corner three to put SU back up six. The River Hawks would ice the game at the line, going six-for-six at the stripe over the last 15 second to earn the win in the final game of 2021.
Martin got to his career-high point total on 9-of-10 shooting, adding six rebounds and five steals. Dominic Dunn was 7-of-13 from the floor, including going 4-of-4 from deep, totaling 23 points and a team-best nine caroms. Frauenheim finished with 18 points and six assists, while first-year Isaiah Oluajayi booked a career-high 10 points.
Haughton posted a career-best 13 points, making 5-of-6 shots attempted on the night, and junior Howie Rankine, Jr. finished with 13 points and three assists off the bench. The River Hawks shot 57.5 percent (42-73) from the field, a season-high for field goals, while also going 11-of-21 (52.4 percent) from three-point land. The 22 free throws made were a season-high as well for SU, and the most makes at the charity stripe since connecting on 27 at Rowan University November 16, 2019.
Ryan Hughes posted 24 points for Ursinus, adding seven rebounds, while Wall totaled 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Sean Neylon posted 16 points, and Kyle Maurer and Marlin Wise finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
