Hampden-Sydney Earns Home Win Past Mary Washington 84-71

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Junior Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) scored a game-high 25 points to lead Hampden-Sydney College to an 84-71 non-conference basketball home win past the University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon during the H-SC Classic at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium. Sophomore Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) added 15 points, while classmates Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) and Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) each scored 10 points for the host Tigers, who improved to 7-1 overall this season. Ra'Shawn Cook scored 21 points for the visiting Eagles, who dropped to 9-3 overall.

"Hard fought game today," said third-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "We turned the ball over more than we would have liked to, but our effort on defense and on the glass was outstanding. That's a really good team and a big win for Tiger basketball."

H-SC scored the first eight points of the contest against UMW, who received votes in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll. Clements led the early charge with six quick points, and the Tigers led 11-2 at 17:15 after a three-point field goal by Brazil. The Eagles, however, answered with nine-straight points to tie the contest at 11-11 less than two minutes later, but the Garnet and Grey responded with a 12-3 run to lead 23-14 at 12:28—getting five quick points from sophomore Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) and a conventional three-point play from Clements. H-SC led 25-18 with 10:20 on the clock after a basket by senior Jack Wyatt (Richmond), but the visitors closed to within 31-30 at 4:25, and the game was tied at 33-33 with 3:36 left in the half. The Tigers outscored UMW 5-2 over the final 2:32 to lead 38-35 at the intermission—getting all five points from Hardy.

H-SC started the second half quickly, as well, scoring the first nine points to push the advantage to 47-35 at 17:28, as Hubbard scored four points and Brazil connected on another three-pointer. The Tigers maintained a double-figure margin for the majority of the second half, leading 54-42 with 10:55 remaining after a steal and slam dunk by Clements … and the Garnet and Grey took their largest lead of the contest at 64-48 with 6:45 left following a layup from Clements. UMW managed to get within eight on two occasions down the stretch, the last at 71-63 with just 1:45 on the clock. The Tigers secured the outcome with 13-14 free throws over the final 1:18, including 6-6 each by Clements and Brazil, respectively.

Clements led H-SC with his game-high 25 points, including 9-12 field goals and 7-7 free throws, along with five steals, four rebounds and three assists. Brazil added 15 points and six rebounds for the Tigers, while Hardy and Hubbard each finished with 10 points—Hardy grabbing nine rebounds, as well. H-SC shot 47% (31-66) from the field, including 19% (4-21) on three-pointers, and 90% (18-20) at the free throw line. The Tigers out-rebounded UMW 47-30, and outscored the Eagles 50-22 in the paint.

Ra'Shawn Cook led UMW with his 21 points, adding four assists and three steals. Da'Shawn Cook added 17 points and five steals for the Eagles, and Anias Saunders had 16 points. UMW shot 36% (21-58) from the field, including 25% (9-36) on three-pointers, and 80% (20-25) at the line.

H-SC, enjoying its finest start to a season since 2005-06 (11-0), will play nationally-ranked No. 23 Maryville (TN) College on Sunday, December 19, at 2 p.m. in Fleet Gym.
