Bangor, ME --- Colin McNamara (Arlington, MA) and John Lowther (Hingham, MA) paced five WPI players in double figures in scoring with 16 points each as the Engineers never trailed en route to an 88-69 road victory at Husson in a non-conference men's basketball contest played on Saturday afternoon.
It was the fourth straight victory for the Crimson and Gray, who improve to 8-1 on the season. It was the third time during the streak and fourth occasion overall this season that the Engineers have led wire-to-wire. In fact, over the last four contests, WPI has only trailed for 1:49 out of 160 minutes.
WPI started out with a 14-0 run stretching over the opening 5:31 of play led by Kahleb Downing (Middletown) who hit a trey for the first shot of the game and another jump shot during that time. Senior center Logan O'Donnell (Fishkill, NY) came off the bench and started making his mark with a pair of good jumpers that extended the lead for WPI to 21-4. O'Donnell posted six first-half points.
Freshman guard Aidan Callahan (Rowley, MA) contributed with a jumper beyond the arc and a layup in the first 8:34 on the court before re-entering and adding two more layups, an assist, and an offensive board in the first half. Lowther hit two shots from three-point land and a layup, while pulling down four rebounds and an assist in the first half.
Downing led the final charge of the opening half with two three-pointers, a steal, and an assist, to total 11 points before WPI went to the locker room with a 47-29 lead over the hosting Eagles.
Sophomore forward John Adams (Douglas, MA) opened the second half notching the first basket with a layup as WPI and Husson traded baskets throughout the entirety of the second half as the Engineers edged the Eagles in second-half scoring, 41-40. Adams tallied five points in the second stanza totaling for seven points, seven rebounds, a steal, and a block on the evening.
Freshman forward Brett Marelli (Hampton, NH) and sophomore guard Andrew Lufkin (Auburn, NH) made appearances in the second half as the former registered seven points and the latter contributed for five points in the contest. O'Donnell capped the evening with four second-half points and a pair of rebounds to account for 10 points off the bench while shooting 5-for-5 from the field for the Crimson and Gray.
McNamara posted seven points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals, in the final 20 minutes of action while Lowther added eight points, a trio of rebounds, a pair of blocks, and one assist to close out the afternoon for the Engineers.
WPI turns its attention to final exams and next plays after Christmas at the Salem State Holiday Classic. The Engineers face Gordon on Wednesday, December 29th, at 2pm, and then square off with the host Vikings the next day at 3pm.
