SWARTHMORE, Pa. - No. 18 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball knocked off Dickinson College, 87-57, in Centennial Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
The Garnet improve to 6-1 and 3-0 in Conference play, while the Red Devils drop to 3-4 and 2-1. Swarthmore extended its win streak against Dickinson to 11 games, with the last five contests being decided by double-digit margins.
Vinny DeAngelo knocked down a three-pointer just ten seconds into the contest to give Swarthmore an early lead. The home team opened the game on an 8-4 run behind five points from DeAngelo and a three-pointer from Conor Harkins. Mid-way through the first half, Aidan Godfrey knocked down a layup to give Swarthmore a 28-18 advantage. The Garnet extended their lead with a three-pointer from Ryan Ingram, a bucket and free-throws from George Corzine and Abass Sallah. After a Colin Shaw layup, the defense forced Dickinson into a shot clock violation. The ensuing possession saw Harkins drain another three for a Swarthmore 21-point lead. Sallah snagged the ball from Drew Hausien and Ingram hit a mid-range jumper as the Garnet took a 46-26 lead into the half-time break.
Out of the half-time break, a Jack Tierney missed three was grabbed by Harkins, who found DeAngelo for the fastbreak layup. With 18:23 left in the game, Haueisen recorded a layup to get Dickinson within 19 points, and that was the closest the Red Devils would get for the rest of the game. Swarthmore went on a 7-0 run behind five points from George Visconti and a pair of points from DeAngelo. With about six minutes remaining, Godfrey knocked down a jumper to extend the Garnet lead to 30 points.
DeAngelo led all scorers with 17 points, while Harkins added 15 points for the Garnet. Ingram, Corzine, and Godfrey finished the game with seven points each, while Visconti added six points. Chuck Sweat, Jared Groff, Major Eason and Roman Hinds all recorded a bucket for Swarthmore.
Swarthmore returns to the court on Wednesday as they travel to Sellinsgrove, Pa. to take on Susquehanna University. Tip-off against the Riverhawks is slated for 7:30 p.m. This will be the 11th meeting between the two programs with the Garnet taking an 80-73 victory on January 5th, 1991.
