No. 23 Rensselaer Begins League Play With 75-64 Win Over Statesmen

TROY, N.Y. - Senior guard Dom Black scored 19 points, classmate Mason Memmelaar had 17 and junior Jonny Angbazo notched 15 to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team to a 75-64 victory over Hobart College in a Liberty League contest at East Campus Arena. The No. 23-ranked Engineers improve to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while the Statesmen drop to 3-5 and 0-1.

The Engineers exhibited their depth in taking a 37-25 lead at halftime as seven different players scored, including five with at least four points. Patrick Mahoney had eight points, while Angbazo, Memmelaar and Black each had seven. RPI shot 48.4% (15 of 31) in the first half, as compared to the Statesmen's 29.0% (9 of 31). Rensselaer out-rebounded Hobart 20-13.

Hobart cut the deficit to six points, 53-47, with 8:27 left in the second half when Carter Meshanic scored on a layup and made the ensuing free throw. The Engineers answered with a 10-2 run, however, to build their lead to 14 points, 63-49, with just over five minutes to play. In the RPI spurt, Mahoney had an and-1, Angbazo hit a free throw, Memmelaar made a pair from the stripe, Black finished an assist from Angbazo with a lay-in and Memmelaar made two more free throws. A free throw from by Hobart's Jack Lesure made it a 13-point difference and then the senior guard cut it to 11 (63-52) with a basket in the paint with five minutes to play.

The Statesmen scored six of the next nine points with Carter Meshanic scoring four of them, but two free throws from both Angbazo and Black put RPI ahead 70-58 with 1:22 to play. Hobart countered with four straight points to cut it to eight points with 54 seconds remaining, but they could manage only two more points after that.

Black led all scorers with 19 points on 5 of 9 shooting from the field and 8 of 11 from the free throw line, while also pulling down five rebounds. Memmelaar made 4 of 6 shots from the floor and 8 of 9 from the foul line with six rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Angbazo and Mahoney, who had 12 points, added six rebounds apiece.

Aidan Rogers was Hobart's high scorer with 15 points, followed by Jackson Meshanic's 14 and Carter Meshanic's 10. Jackson chipped in with six rebounds, which was second on the team to Chandler Owenby, who had nine boards.
 
The Engineers return to the court on Saturday at 2pm against RIT in Troy, while Hobart visits Vassar on Saturday at 4pm.
