No. 8 Men's Basketball Falls to Widener

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - No. 8 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball dropped a hard fought non-conference game against 320 rival Widener University, 77-66, on Saturday at Tarble Pavilion. 

The Garnet fall to 3-1, while the Pride improve to 3-1. Swarthmore struggled from the field shooting only 32% and 29.4% from three point range.

Both teams exchanged points in the opening minutes of the first half, before Swarthmore took a four lead on a George Visconti jumper. With Swarthmore leading 6-2, Jared Peters got Widener back on the board with a jumper. The Garnet extended its lead by seven points on a Conor Harkins three. Swarthmore went into the locker trailing 41-38 as they shot 44.4% from the field and 37.5% from three in the opening frame. 

Just seconds into the second half, George Corzine inched Swarthmore closer with a layup from Visconti. Mid-way through the second half, a Colin Shaw and a pair of free throws from Vinny DeAngelo got the Garnet within six points. Unfortunatley, the Pride took advantage of the free-throw line to extend their lead. In the second half, Widener shot 57.14% from the free throw line on 21 attempts.

The Garnet were led by 20 points from Visconti and 13 from Harkins. DeAngelo and Shaw added 11 points, while Corzine tallied three blocks and four boards. Michael Carpise added five points off the bench for the Garnet. 

Swarthmore will return to the court on Tuesday as they travel to Allentown, Pa. to open Centennial Conference action. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m.
