Case Western Reserve University graduate student guard Griffin Kornaker dished out a program-record tying 13 assists, and senior guard Robert Faller scored a career-high 25 points, as the Spartans turned in a dominating 111-82 win over John Carroll University at Horsburgh Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The win is the seventh-straight for the Spartans, who improved to 7-1 overall on the season, matching the 1984-85 squad for the best eight-game start in program history. In the process, CWRU handed John Carroll its first loss of the season, as the Blue Streaks dropped to 4-1 overall.

Kornaker's 13 assists matched former Spartan Jim Fox for the most in a game in program history, a mark Fox set against Wittenberg University on January 9, 1996. Kornaker added seven points, three rebounds and a steal in the game.

Faller turned in one of the best games of his career with the 25-point effort, surpassing his previous career of 20 points against Brandeis in 2020. He also connected on a career-best five three pointers on six attempts, and shot 10-of-13 overall, with three rebounds, three assists, a block and two steals. He did most of his damage in the second half of the game, scoring 15 points to help the Spartans pull away.

Four other CWRU players scored in double figures on Saturday, including first-year forward Umar Rashid, who broke out for a career-high 16 points off the bench on six-of-seven shooting overall and four-of-five from behind the three-point line. Graduate student guard Mitch Prendergast added 16 points as well on six-of-12 shooting overall and three-of-six from three-point range, while dishing out five assists. Junior forward Cole Frilling scored 11 points and led all Spartans with nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Sophomore forward Hunter Drenth added 10 points off the bench for CWRU.

After falling behind 5-4 with 18:20 to play in the opening half, the Spartans went on a 15-3 run, including threes by Faller, Prendergast, and Frilling, to take an 11-point lead, 19-8. Seven unanswered points later in the half on layups by graduate student forward Brian Hines and Kornaker and a three by Rashid helped the Spartans take a 16-point lead, 39-23, with 7:16 to go in the stanza. CWRU maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the half, and carried a 55-41 lead into halftime, in large part due to a 66.7% (10-of-15) shooting percentage in the opening frame.

CWRU started the second half fast as well, scoring the first 10 points of the half and opening the period on a 13-2 run overall that saw the team's lead balloon to 27 points, 70-43, with 17:18 to play in the game. John Carroll would be unable to cut the lead to less than 25 points the rest of the way, and CWRU's lead grew to as many as 35 points on a layup by first-year guard Luke Gensler that made the score 109-74 with 3:42 to play.

The Spartans' 111 points matched the third-highest single game total in program history. The team's 60.0% (45-of-75) from the floor was the second-highest mark this season for CWRU, while their 58.6% (17-of-29) was the best this season.

Saturday's game wrapped up a perfect 4-0 home stand for the Spartans. Case Western Reserve will be back in action next Saturday, December 4, when the team travels to face Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan at 1:00 p.m.
