Late Run Leads DeSales past Scranton, 72-66; Bulldogs Stay Unbeaten to start season

Bethlehem, PA (November 20, 2021) - The DeSales University men's basketball team finished the game on a 20-7 run to stay unbeaten on the season with a 72-66 win over The University of Scranton on Saturday afternoon in Johnston Hall on the campus of Moravian University.

  • The game was played at Moravian University after a backboard was shattered in Billera Hall last night at practice.

How it Happened

  • DeSales took an early 8-2 lead before Scranton responded with a 10-3 run to take a 12-11 advantage early.
  • After several ties during the first-half, UofS scored eight straight points to take its largest lead of the game (34-26) and continued to lead at the half (38-33).
  • The two teams traded baskets for the first seven minutes of the second-half before DSU tied the game at 50 and remained tied at 52 at the 10-minute mark.
  • The Royals scored seven straight points after the tie at 52 to take a 59-52 lead but it was all Bulldogs after that.
  • Two straight buckets from sophomore Elijah Eberly stopped the Royals' run and a three from senior Dat Lambert at the 4:10 mark gave DSU a 62-60 lead.
  • A free throw and driving lay-up from senior Matt Kachelries saw the Bulldogs leading by three at the 3:04 mark when junior Keba Mitchell nearly broke his second rim in as many days thundering home a follow jam on a miss from Lambert with 2:13 left to play.
  • Mitchell then had a block on the other end forcing a stop before the Bulldogs were called for a shot clock violation on the next possession.
  • Two free throws from Scranton with 1:12 to go made it a three-point game but a Lambert freebie pushed the lead back to two possessions and with 38 seconds left Kachelries put the icing on the cake with a steal and fast break lay-up giving DSU a 70-64 lead before the final tally was posted.

Top Bulldog Performers

  • Kachelries led all scorers with 20 points and added six boards and six assists.
  • Lambert finished with 14 points and also pulled down six boards.
  • Sophomore Mason Barnes had 12 points off the bench and also had six rebounds, adding four steals.
  • Mitchell grabbed a team-high seven boards.

For the Foes

  • Stephen Braunstein had a team-high 16 points, hitting three 3's.
  • Ryan Ems totaled 13 points and Will McLoughlin finished with 14 points off the bench.

Inside the Box Score

  • The under sized Bulldogs out-rebounded the Royals, 37-32, and had a 40-32 advantage on points in the paint.
  • DSU also had 17 second-chance points.
  • After shooting 57.7 percent from the field in the first-half, DeSales held UofS to just 25.9 percent shooting in the second-half.
