Spartans Extend Winning Streak to Four with 90-68 Win over Thiel

Case Western Reserve University graduate student guard Mitch Prendergast was among four Spartan scorers in double figures on Tuesday night with a team-high 18 points, as CWRU bested Thiel College 90-68 at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio for its fourth-straight win.

The Spartans improved to 4-1 on the season, while Thiel dropped to 0-4 following the loss.

Prendergast finished the game shooting seven-of-10, including a perfect four-for-four from behind the three point line, while adding four rebounds, two assists and a steal. Graduate student guard Griffin Kornaker narrowly missed a double-double with 13 points and nine assists, while junior forward Cole Frilling added 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Graduate student forward Brian Hines made his presence in the paint felt, finishing with 11 points, seven rebounds and four blocks.

As a team, the Spartans finished the game shooting a season-high 56.0% (14-of-25) from behind the three-point line, and shot 51.4% (36-for-70) overall. CWRU also tallied season bests with 41 rebounds, 23 assists and 11 blocks (the third-most in a game in team history).

The Spartans opened the game on a 12-0 run over the first four and a half minutes of action, which included threes by Prendergast and Kornaker. CWRU's lead grew to as many as 29 points in the opening half, following a layup by senior forward Ryan Newton that made the score 46-17 with 2:31 left in the period, and CWRU carried a 27-point advantage, 51-24, into halftime.


Case Western Reserve took a game-high 38-point lead after a steal and a three by first-year guard Sam Trunley put the Spartans in from 85-47 with 6:10 to play, as the Spartans ultimately cruised to the 22-point victory.

Thirteen different CWRU players scored at least a point in Tuesday night's game.

The Spartans will continue their four-game home stand on Thursday, when CWRU plays host to Otterbein University at 7:00 p.m.
