Men’s Basketball conquers Division I Delaware State, 91-78

DOVER, Del. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team traveled up Route 13 and dismantled the Delaware State Hornets, 91-78, in an exhibition matchup on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Sea Gulls wasted no time taking control of the game. The Sea Gulls started the game on with a 12-2 run, highlighted by a Gary Briddell three-pointer assisted by Sean Carr. On the ensuing possession, Briddell returned the favor and assisted on a Carr jumper.
  • Salisbury's defense did not allow Delaware State to reach double digits until the nine-minute mark in the first half after Corey Perkins made a free throw to make it 29-10 in favor of the Sea Gulls.
  • Sidney Lebonzo responded on the next possession with a three. The Hornets answered with a 12-3 scoring run capped off by a Dominik Fragala three that made it, 35-23. But the Sea Gulls settled and cooled the Hornet run to take a 43-26 lead into halftime.
  • Salisbury continued the sharpshooting in the second half. A 22-9 scoring run pushed the Salisbury lead to as much as 28 points, 67-39, with just under 13 minutes left to play.
  • Delaware State went on a brief run to cut the lead to 12 points, 67-55, with 7:40 left in regulation but Salisbury took back control of the game and cruised to the exhibition victory.
  • The Sea Gulls were lights out in the second half, scoring 48 points on 53.1 percent (17-32) from the field and 50 percent (10-20) from deep.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Gary Briddell led the offense with 25 points, shooting 7-of-13 from the field and 5-of-9 from three-point range. Briddell also added eight rebounds and six assists to his line.
  • Jordan Oates finished with 11 points, nine boards and two blocks.
  • Rob Goyena and Sidney Lebonzo each scored double-digits off the bench, 14 and 12 points respectively. Goyena was also 4-of-6 from three-point range. Lebonzo added five rebounds.
  • Greg Bloodsworth and Cameron Heard each had seven points. Heard dished out six assists while Bloodworth handed out five dimes.
  • Sean Carr chipped in with eight points and four rebounds.
  • The Sea Gulls shot 49.2 percent (31-63) from the floor and 39.5 percent (15-38) from beyond the arc.
  • Salisbury also controlled the glass with 44 rebounds compared to Del State's 36.
  • Salisbury led the entire game.
  • The Sea Gulls improved to 2-0 in Division I exhibition games under head coach Mo Williams.

DELAWARE STATE GAME NOTES

  • Dominik Fragala led the Hornet offense with 31 points.
  • Myles Carter added 11 points, nine rebounds and six assists.
  • The Hornets only shot 23.8 percent (5-21) from three-point range.
