NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The No. 1-seeded Westminster College men's basketball team won, 101-60 over the six-seeded Thiel College Tomcats in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Semifinals at home Thursday night.
The Titan's 101 points were the most points scored in 15 years (2006-07 season), when Westminster scored 102 points against Bethany on February 17, 2007.
Westminster (10-1) wasted no time getting the jump on Thiel (4-7), as it opened the first 10 minutes of the game with a 26-10 run. The Titans closed the half on a 20-8 run and held a commanding 46-18 lead at intermission. Westminster shot 50% from the field in the first half and held Thiel to 20.7% shooting in the first frame. Senior Daniel Ritter (North Lima, OH / South Range) and first-year Reese Leone (Beloit, OH / West Branch) were each in double figures at halftime, leading with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
In the second half, Westminster did not take its foot off the gas, extending its lead to 71-35 with ten minutes left in the contest. The Titans held an 87-42 lead with 5:15 remaining and cruised to victory. Westminster led for the entire contest.
Four Titans scored in double figures in the contest. Leone recorded a career-high 20 points (tied a game-high) to go along with a game-high six assists. Leone also knocked down a game-high four three pointers. Ritter matched Leone with 20 points to go along with five boards. Senior Isaac Stamatiades (Elkridge, MD / Avalon) earned his tenth double-double of the season (29th career) with a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with 19 points. Stamatiades also swatted a career- and game high four blocks. Junior Tyler James (Youngstown, OH / Warren JFK) tallied 13 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Jordan Zupko (Mineral Ridge, OH / Mineral Ridge) added seven points, while seniors Josh Hutcherson (Uniontown, OH / Uniontown Lake) and Anthony Ritter (North Lima, OH / South Range) each chipped in six points.
For the game, the Titans shot a crisp 54.3% (38-70) from the field compared to 33.3% (22-66) for the Tomcats. Westminster also shot 45.8% (11-24) from beyond the arc and also dished out a season-high 22 assists.
Westminster will host the PAC Championship game for the second time in three years on Saturday, March 18, as it will take on the No. 4 seed, defending PAC Champion Grove City College, who defeated No. 2 seed Geneva. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
