Anthony Scores 20 as R-MC Men’s Hoops Repeats as ODAC Champs

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Senior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding), the tourney Most Outstanding Player, scored 20 points as the fifth-seeded and top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team won 70-62 at third-seeded Lynchburg on Thursday evening in the Championship Game of the 2021 ODAC Tournament.

How it Happened:

  • The Hornets hit a three-pointer to start the scoring before layups by sophomore Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) and Anthony gave the Yellow Jackets their first lead at 4-3. Lynchburg built an 11-6 advantage before a trey by junior Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) and a layup by Mallory leveled the score at 11-11 six minutes into the contest. The Hornets scored the next six points before a triple by Robertson capped an 8-1 spurt as R-MC went up 19-18 with nine minutes left in the first half. Lynchburg used a 8-2 run to go up five before another Robertson trey ended a 7-2 spurt to tie it at 28-28 with 2:40 left. After a bucket by the Hornets, a three-pointer by sophomore Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) gave R-MC a 31-30 edge with 1:40 remaining. Lynchburg hit a trey to end the first-half scoring and give the home team a 33-31 advantage. Robertson hit three treys off the bench to lead the Yellow Jackets with nine points.
  • Anthony had four of R-MC's first six points of the second half as the Yellow Jackets took a 37-33 lead. Following four points by the Hornets to tie it at 37-37, senior Lorenzo Woods (Burlington, N.C./Burlington School) nailed a trey and Anthony had a three-point play as R-MC went up 43-37 with 15 minutes left. The Yellow Jackets led 46-42 before an 8-2 run over the next seven minutes gave the visitors a 54-44 lead with 7:15 remaining. A layup by David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) extended the lead to 14 at 60-46 with 3:20 remaining. R-MC went 10 for 10 from the free throw line in the final minute to secure the 70-62 victory.

  • R-MC had three score in double figures. Along with 20 by Anthony, Robertson finished with 14 and Talbert added 12.
  • Anthony went 5 for 11 from the floor and 9 for 9 from the free throw line.
  • Robertson and Talbert paced the Yellow Jackets with seven rebounds each.
