ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Five players scored 10 or more points as the University of Rochester outlasted St. John Fisher College, 86-73, in a men's basketball game at the Blue Cross Arena in downtown Rochester Wednesday night.
Rochester is 3-2 in this abbreviated season. The Yellowjackets are scheduled to play Medaille College at Blue Cross Arena on Sunday afternoon. That will conclude the year.
The high-scoring affair was marked by strong inside play from Rochester (46 points in the paint) while Fisher countered with 15 second chance points on 11 offensive rebounds. The Cardinals (2-1) placed three men in double figures. Brendan Trapper led the way with 32 points, hitting 10 of 16 from the floor, 10 of 11 at the foul line. Daniel Cook contributed 21 points, and Sean Williams scored 12.
Rochester's leader was Brian Amabilino Perez with 20 points, including 8-8 at the foul line and six of eight from the field. Ross Gang was 6-10 from the floor, scoring 16 points, handed out five assists, and grabbed eight rebounds – all off the defensive glass. Trent Noordsij had 13 points, Mitchell Kershner scored 11 and Kailan Lee finished with 10. Lee had four assists. Amabilino Perez Ryan Algier, and C.J. Amsellem had three each. Ansellem blocked two shots. The Yellowjackets rgistered 20 assists on 31 baskets.
It was tightly played. The teams combined to shoot 43 of 53 at the foul line. Fisher was 24 of 31, led by Trapper (10 of 11) and Cook (8 of 12). Rochester's leader at the stripe was Amabilino Perez. He was 8-8. UR was19 of 22 overall.
Rochester's points it he paint were dictated by the pace. Rochester hit 18 of 28 from the floor in the first half (64%), 13 of 22 in the second 20 minutes (59%). Fisher got off to a cold start, hitting just eight of 32 from the floor in the opening half. The Cardinals did capitalize from the foul line though, making 15 of 18.
UR used a pair of traditional three-point plays midway through the first period, one by T.C. Price and another by Ryan Aliger to build a 10-point lead (21-11 with 12:04 left in the half). It grew to 14, and eventually to 15 (45-30) in the final minute. Rochester led, 45-33, at intermission.
Fisher charged back. The Cardinals went on an extended run and when Trapper drained a 3-pointer, the UR lead was down to four, 57-53. Amabilino Perez scored on a layup but Trapper hit another trey, cutting it to 59-56. Amabilino Perez answered with another three-point play, then added two free throws 30 seconds later to push the margin to eight (64-56 with 9:45 on the clock).
Gang made one free throw, then hit a jumper in the paint to restore the double-figure margin (67-56). Cook took over as Fisher's scoring solution. He scored seven in a row to cut it to 71-65.
The Yellowjackets re-organized. Price hit a jumper in the paint, Lee scored in the paint on a fast break, Noordsij made a layup, and Kershner hit a perimeter jumper. The lead was 10 with two minutes left and Kershner provided the final thrust with a 3-pointer (82-69).
