AJ Blue's clutch shot gives W&J men win at Westminster, 64-63

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- AJ Blue (Kensington, Md./Sidwell Friends (D.C.) drained the go-ahead three-pointer with 9.3 seconds to play to give the W&J men's basketball team a 64-63 road win over Westminster on Saturday afternoon.

The win improves W&J to 2-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play. The loss was the first of the season for Westminster, who was receiving votes in this past week's D3hoops.com National Top 15 poll.

Kyran Mitchell (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) put together another strong effort in the victory, as the sophomore tallied 18 points and matched the team-high with nine rebounds. Cameron Seemann (Loveland, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) paced the Presidents with a game-high 19 points. Zach Queen (Jeannette, Pa./Hempfield Area) filled the stat sheet with nine points, nine rebounds and a pair of assists. Nicholas Campalong (Sewickley, Pa./Ambridge) tallied seven points and six boards off of the bench.

Mitchell sparked an early first half lead for the Presidents, as he scored six consecutive points to give the Red and Black a 16-9 lead at the 13:14 mark. After the Titans responded with nine straight points to take an 18-16 lead at the midway point of the first half, Seemann drained a triple to make it 19-18 Presidents with 10 minutes until the halftime break. Westminster would again respond with a lengthy run, as the home team built a 28-19 edge after 10 straight points. W&J was able to trim its deficit to three (30-27) at halftime.

A pair of free throws by Mitchell gave W&J its first lead of the second half, a 36-35 advantage with 16:03 to play. The game was back and forth from there as the teams traded scores. A triple by the Titans' Anthony Ritter gave the home team a six-point (50-44) lead with 10:47 remaining. However, the Presidents countered with triples from Seemann and Campalong to even the score at 50 with 8:12 to play. Neither team led by more than four points the rest of the way. Back-to-back baskets by Mitchell gave W&J a three-point lead with just 1:28 remaining. However, Westminster appeared poised to sneak away with the victory after five straight points made the score 63-61 with 31 seconds left.

That set the stage for Blue's game-winner in the waning seconds. Blue, who provided heroics in a home victory against Westminster last season, was up to the task again in 2021. An offensive rebound by Queen and an assist by Mitchell allowed Blue to knock down the game-winner. The Presidents defense withstood a pair of last-second opportunities for the Titans before the buzzer sounded.

Isaac Stamatiades recorded a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Titans in the loss. W&J held a significant advantage in points in the paint, outscoring Westminster by a 36-20 margin.
