Stormy Petrels complete two-game sweep of Millsaps with 80-67 win

The Oglethorpe men's basketball team improved to 5-1 Saturday at the midway point of their SAA season, running away from the Millsaps Majors, 80-67, for a second straight day.

The Stormy Petrels led by as many as 20 points en route to a fairly comfortable victory, shooting 36.4 percent from beyond the 3-point arc and converting on 84.2 percent of their free throws.

Junior guard Carlos Sone enjoyed his best game of the season so far, pouring in 19 points on 6-of-10 from the field overall and 5-of-8 from 3-point range while also grabbing 11 rebounds. Senior guard Dimetri Chambers added 19 points on 3-of-8 from 3-point range while contributing four assists and three steals. 

The Petrels built as big as a 13-point lead in the first half, outscoring the Majors 33-20 over the opening 16 minutes of the contest. Millsaps pulled it back to a 5-point game at halftime, outscoring Oglethorpe 15-7 over the remainder of the period.

In the second half, the home side began on a 13-2 run to take a 53-39 lead with 15:35 on the clock. They then extended their lead with an additional 14-4 run to build their largest lead of the game, 67-47, with 10:55 on the clock. Millsaps went on a run of their own, though, cutting the Oglethorpe lead all the way back down to 71-62 with 4:05 remaining. The Petrels were able to pull back out to a 15-point lead over the next couple minutes and finish the game off.

Oglethorpe will be back in action next weekend, when they travel to Conway, Arkansas, to take on Hendrix for games on Saturday and Sunday.
