The Oglethorpe men's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season Sunday afternoon at Bill Battle Coliseum in Birmingham, Alabama, falling to the homestanding Birmingham-Southern Panthers 110-78. The defeat dropped the Stormy Petrels to 3-1 on the season.
After shooting over 56 percent from the field and almost 53 percent from 3-point range in their win over the Panthers Saturday evening, the Petrels just couldn't get shots to fall on Sunday. They shot just 39.7 percent from the field and went just 7-of-28 from 3-point range while Birmingham-Southern converted 60 percent of their field goal attempts and 46.7 percent of their 3-point attempts. In addition, the Petrels went just 9-of-16 from the free throw line and were outrebounded 54-29.
The Petrels remained in the game for much of the early-going. They fell behind 7-2 over the first two minutes, but came back with five straight points to tie the game at 9-9. They followed that up with a 13-4 run over a 3:15 stretch to build a 22-16 lead with 11:30 remaining in the opening half of play. However, Birmingham-Southern responded with a 25-7 spurt over a six-minute span to take a 41-29 lead at the 5:30 mark. Oglethorpe cut it back to as little as a 7-point game later in the period, but the Panthers finished the half on a 14-7 run over the final four minutes to take a 58-44 lead into the locker room.
The home side then took complete control of the game in the second half. They outscored the Petrels 52-34 over the course of the period as the visitors shot just 31.1 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes.
Senior guard Dimetri Chambers again led the Petrels with 18 points, adding four steals and three assists. Sophomore forward Uba Ezigbo scored 17 points on 8-of-14 from the floor, while senior guard Lane Foster contributed 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
"We took one on the chin today," said Oglethorpe head coach Philip Ponder. "As well as we played last night, they were that good today. The bottom line is we couldn't consistently get stops, so we are going to have to get better defensively and on the glass. We had a tough day today, but it's one game. We'll look to bounce back at hone this coming weekend."
The Petrels will host Rhodes for a two-game set at Dorough Field House, taking on the Lynx Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
