Stormy Petrels use hot shooting to beat Birmingham-Southern 105-95, improve to 3-0

The Oglethorpe men's basketball team shot their way to an impressive 105-95 win over the Birmingham-Southern Panthers Saturday evening in Birmingham, Alabama, improving to 3-0 on the season. The Stormy Petrels sank 56.3 percent of their field goal attempts, 52.8 percent of their 3-point attempts and all six of their free throws en route to the 10-point victory.

Senior guard Dimetri Chambers enjoyed another outstanding game, scoring 34 points on 13-of-20 from the field overall and 6-of-10 from beyond the arc. He also added three assists and three steals. Junior guard Carlos Sone added 12 points and five assists, while sophomore guard Jack Murrah enjoyed a career day off the bench. The latter scored 17 points on 6-of-8 overall and 5-of-7 from distance.

The Petrels combined to make 19 three-pointers in the game. Chambers, Sone and junior guard Ryan Jenei combined to go 15-for-22 from 3-point range. 

Just like in the first two games of the season, Oglethorpe pushed out to a first-half lead. After Birmingham-Southern built an early 9-5 advantage, the Petrels went on a 12-2 run to take a 17-11 lead with 13:05 left until halftime. After the home side took a 1-point lead back, the Petrels vaulted back into the lead with a 24-9 stretch over 6:50, building a 43-29 advantage. They led by as many as 20 points in the opening half.

In the second half, they built their lead to its largest of the game, 27 points, when they went on a 14-1 spurt over a four-minute stretch and took a 77-50 lead with 14:10 to go in the game. The Panthers slowly fought to lower the deficit from there, but the damage had already been done, allowing the Petrels to cruise to a 10-point victory.

Oglethorpe will complete their two-game set with Birmingham-Southern Sunday afternoon from Alabama. The two teams are set to tip off at 2 p.m. Eastern from the Bill Battle Coliseum in Birmingham.
