Danyon Hempy is The College of Wooster's latest All-American, as the senior was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches first-team, as announced by the organization on Wednesday morning.

Hempy's the fifth different Fighting Scot to be named a first-team NABC All-American in the 2000s, as he joins Wooster greats Bryan Nelson (2002-03), Tom Port (2006-07), Ian Franks (2009-10), and Doug Thorpe (2013-14). Wooster's now had the most different players selected as first-team NABC All-Americans in the 2000s of any NCAA Div. III program.

"Personally, I'm thrilled that Danyon was named a first-team All-American," said head coach Steve Moore. "He's had a tremendous career and an outstanding senior season. He's very deserving of this outstanding honor."

The NABC Div. III Great Lakes District Player of the Year ranks third in program history with 2,031 points, 690 of which were scored this season, a total that's the second-most in single-season program history. Hempy's 23.8 points per game were the 16th-highest in Div. III this year, and his 690 points were the eighth-most within the division.

While Hempy's play was remarkable all season long, his numbers against opponents which qualified for the NCAA Div. III Championships were even more impressive. The psychology major averaged 24.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per night in those seven games (University of Mount Union, St. John Fisher College, The College at Brockport, State University of New York, Whitworth University, and three games against Wittenberg University) leading up to the Div. III Championships. Among those outings was a then-career-high 32-point effort against Brockport, during which Hempy was a remarkable 10-of-13 from the floor, 10-of-12 at the charity stripe, secured eight rebounds, dished out four assists, and blocked four shots. He later upped his career high to 38 points against Kenyon College, and then to 40 versus DePauw University.

The North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year's 40-point outing against DePauw was a sign of things to come, as he kept scoring at a torrid pace during the NCAC Tournament. Hempy poured in 90 points over the three-game stretch, during which Wooster won its NCAC-leading 17th conference tourney crown. In the process, Hempy broke the 34-year-old NCAC Tournament record for points.

Hempy's 23.8 points per game is the highest per-game scoring average since Tom Dinger's 24.4 per-game average in the 1970-71 season. Hempy's 243 field goals and 148 free throws are the second- and sixth-most in single-season program history, respectively. He logged 21 20-point games this season, had 15 games with at least four assists, and 11 games with at least six rebounds.

Additionally, D3hoops.com announced on Tuesday evening that Hempy was one of the seniors selected to play in the 2020 Reese's Div. III College All-Star Game. The game, which will not be played this year, is typically played prior to the national championship game, but this year was slated to go prior to the national semifinals on Saturday, March 21, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The teams are composed of two senior student-athletes from each of the eight regions in Div. III, two at-large selections, and two seniors who were selected by online voting on D3hoops.com.

Wooster finished the year with a 21-8 record, made its NCAA Div. III record 18th consecutive (29th overall) appearance in the NCAA Div. III Championships, and the Scots logged a 24th consecutive 20-win season.
