Baltimore, MD --- Ryan Turell (Los Angeles, CA) netted a career-high 41 points to lift No. 13 Yeshiva (NY) to a 102-78 victory over WPI in a NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Division III first round contest played Friday afternoon at Johns Hopkins.  

WPI was led by an 18-point effort from NEWMAC Rookie of the Year John Lowther (Hingham, MA) and another four Engineers added double-digit efforts but it wasn't enough to take down a Yeshiva team that lost just one game in 2019-20.  

John Gates (Hingham, MA) added 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting, NEWMAC Defensive Player of the Year Jake Wisniewski (West Brookfield, MA) contributed 12 points five rebounds and three assists on the offensive front, Kahleb Downing (Middletown, CT) added 11 points and six helpers and Garrett Stephenson (Townsend, MA) finished with 10 points in the loss.  

The Maccabees (28-1) were propelled by an outstanding effort from Turell who connected on seven 3-pointers on the day, while Simcha Halpert (Los Angeles, CA) added 20 points and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.  

Yeshiva was unstoppable from the field shooting 60.7 percent, compared to WPI's 46.2 percent effort. The Maccabees also knocked down 15 treys as a team while WPI was only able to amass a still-impressive nine.  

The Engineers were in the game early on getting out to as much as a 9-6 lead thanks to a pair of buckets from Wisniewski, but a 9-0 run for Yeshiva gave them a 22-11 lead with 10:48 to go and they never relented. A 15-4 run towards the end of the first half helped Yeshiva to a 51-30 halftime advantage.  

WPI, who held its opponents to a NEWMAC best 65.4 ppg in 2019-20 was just unable to contain the Yeshiva offense and though the Engineers were able to put up 48 points of their own in the second half, they could not overcome the deficit falling 102-78 in their season finale.  

WPI finishes out its 2019-20 campaign with a 20-8 record and its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2015-16. Yeshiva, which won its first NCAA Tournament game, will have the winner of tonight's contest between the host Blue Jays and Penn State Harrisburg in second round matchup on Saturday at 8:45pm.
