SALEM, Va. -- Freshman Ryan Clements/Conyers, Ga. scored 19 points, but No. 8 seed Hampden-Sydney College dropped a season-ending 80-61 decision to No. 1 seed and nationally-ranked No. 5 Randolph-Macon College in the quarterfinals of the 2020 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Basketball Tournament on Friday afternoon at Salem Civic Center in Salem. Sophomore Jack Wyatt/Richmond added 15 points for the Tigers (14-13), who trailed 40-24 at halftime before closing to within 64-57 with 6:36 remaining. Josh Talbert scored a game-high 20 points for the Yellow Jackets (24-2), who made 14 three-point field goals and closed the contest on a 16-4 run for the victory.

H-SC got on the scoreboard first as freshman Chase Turner/Virginia Beach scored on a layup at 18:54, assisted by junior captain Jake Hahn/Ruckersville. It was tied at 9-9 after a pair of free throws from Turner at 14:16, and it was knotted again at 12-12 with 12:53 left in the half following a three-pointer by senior captain Kevin Quinn/Apex, N.C. R-MC, however, used a 14-0 run to push the advantage to 26-12 at 8:40, and the Yellow Jackets took their largest lead of the half at 28-13 with 7:32 on the clock. The Tigers responded with a 10-2 run, getting points from Wyatt, Clements and Hahn to close to within 30-23 at 3:21, following a three-pointer by sophomore Cole Atwood/Mount Olive, N.C., but the top seed finished the half with a 9-1 run to lead 40-24 at the intermission.

R-MC extended its advantage in the second half, taking its largest lead of the contest at 59-38 with 12:53 remaining. H-SC, however, decided to make things interesting and put together a 19-5 run to close to within 64-57 at 6:36. Clements (7) and Johnson (7), along with Wyatt (5) supplied the points, with Clements and Wyatt each connecting on three-pointers, while Johnson added a conventional three-point play. The Yellow Jackets, though, responded with their game-closing 16-4 run behind a pair of three-pointers from Corey Bays to secure their victory and advance to Saturday's semifinals.

Clements led H-SC with his 19 points, adding six rebounds and two steals before fouling out with 2:43 remaining. Wyatt finished with his 15 points, adding a game-high eight rebounds for the Tigers. Johnson had 12 points and three assists off the bench. H-SC shot 41% (18-44) from the field, including 38% (6-16) on three-pointers, and 70% (19-27) at the free throw line. Clements finished the season especially strong for the Tigers, averaging 19.6 points and 7.7 rebounds over the final seven games.

Talbert led R-MC with his game-high 20 points, including 4-8 three-pointers, adding seven rebounds and three assists. ODAC Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year Buzz Anthony finished with 18 points, five rebounds, a game-high nine assists, and three steals for the Yellow Jackets. Bays had 15 points, including 5-14 three-pointers, adding five rebounds, while David Funderburg contributed 10 points. R-MC shot 37% (28-75) from the field, including 29% (14-48) on three-pointers, and 77% (10-13) at the line. The Yellow Jackets enjoyed advantages of 17-2 in points off turnovers, 26-18 in points in the paint, 25-5 in second chance points, and 29-17 in bench points.

It was the final collegiate game for H-SC seniors Chaise Johnson and Kevin Quinn, the latter adding three points, four rebounds and two steals against R-MC. Johnson concludes his career with 714 career points, 179 career rebounds, 137 career assists, 51 career steals and 89 career three-pointers. Quinn concludes his career with 838 career points, 266 career rebounds, 64 career assists, 59 career steals and 182 career three-pointers.

H-SC completes the 2019-20 campaign under first-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough with 14 wins, the most for the program since 2015-16 (17), including a 10-win improvement from a season ago, and could return as many as 15 lettermen for next season.
