HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Junior Chris LaBelle scored a game-high 22 points to lead the No. 1 Centenary University men's basketball team to a 76-67 win over No. 4 Wilson College in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Semifinals on Wednesday night.
The Cyclones, who broke the school record for single season wins with their 18th of the season, advanced to the CSAC Championship for the first time in program history.
"We had a great effort from many guys to the get the win," said interim head coach Jason Geleski. "Harrison Lucibello had one of his finest floor games of the season. Chris LaBelle had another double-double and Tom Weiler and D'Angelo Blackmond had big games for us."
"Wilson is a solid team and as the adage goes its hard to beat a team three times in a season," added Geleski. "I'm very pleased with our win to advance to the CSAC Championship game for the first time in program history."
The two teams went back-and-forth at the at the start of the contest as a lay-up from Blackmond at 15:28 put the Cyclones on top 8-6.
Wilson scored six of the next eight points and took a 13-10 edge with 13:06 showing on the clock. Rashaan Bean had three points during that stretch for the Cyclones.
Centenary scored the next 10 points in the game and took a 20-13 lead with 10:53 to go until the half. Blackmond scored four straight before LaBelle and Lucibello connected on three-pointers.
The Cyclones and Phoenix traded points before an 8-0 run gave Wilson a 26-22 advantage at the 5:17 mark.
Centenary closed the first half on a 13-2 run and took a 35-28 lead at the break. Lucibello had four points during that stretch.
The Cyclones and Phoenix traded buckets to start the second half as a Weiler lay-up at 13:10 gave Centenary a 45-37 lead.
Wilson tallied nine of the next 11 points in the game and cut the Centenary advantage to 47-46 with 10:13 to play in the contest.
Centenary used a 10-3 run to push its lead to 57-49 with 7:10 to play in the game. LaBelle and Weiler each had three points in that stretch.
The two teams continued to battle on each end of the court as a jumper from sophomore Billy Veras put the Cyclones ahead 63-54 at the 4:21 mark.
Centenary was 8-for-8 from the foul line in the final minute of play to claim the 76-67 win.
Centenary shot 41 percent from the field and was 22-for-27 from the foul line. Wilson post a 31.0 field goal percentage and was 17-for-23 from the foul line. Wilson held a 53-38 advantage in the rebounding battle.
LaBelle, who was named the CSAC Player of the Year on Monday, recorded his fourth double-double of the season. He finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds and two assists. Lucibello had 15 points and three steals while Blackmond added 14 points and eight rebounds. Weiler was the fourth Cyclone in double figures with 12 points.
Adrian Thomas led Wilson with 16 points and 16 rebounds.
The Cyclones will host No. 2 Cairn University in the CSAC Championship game on Saturday, Feb. 29.
