BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Alex Kravchuk tossed in a season-high 30 points to lead the University of New England in a 98-79 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball win versus Curry College on Tuesday night (Feb. 11) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
Victorious in five of their last six, the Nor'easters improve to 13-9 overall and 7-6 in league action heading into a date with Western New England University (9-5 CCC) on Saturday.
Kravchuk notched 16 before halftime, which was enough to surpass the 1,000-point milestone for his career (74 games). The junior guard became the 31st player in program history to reach the scoring mark by going 12-of-18 from the field in the contest, and equaled a personal-best with 13 rebounds for his fourth double-double.
Siddiq Canty dialed up 18 points and eight boards for UNE. Avery DeBrito totaled nine points, while Ray Evans and Nathan Holt scored eight apiece. Ric Castillo grabbed nine caroms to support a 53-42 rebounding advantage.
The Nor'easters connected at a 58 percent clip from inside the arc (30-for-52), which added up to 58 points in the paint.
UNE led the entire way, and broke away with a 28-7 run during the 1st period to assume a 41-18 cushion with 7:50 remaining before intermission. The spread was 28 (59-31) at the break; the hosts held Curry to 32 percent shooting accuracy in the opening frame.
Canty threw down his second dunk midway through the 2nd half to increase the gap to 32 (82-50). The Colonels did manage to record the next 13 points, but the deficit was way too large to overcome.
Angelo Sardegna hit 5-of-6 three-pointers to end up with 23 points for Curry (5-17, 1-12 CCC). Daymeann Stewart posted all of his 18 points following halftime, and Michael Ashley accounted for 16 points and 12 rebounds.
