BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team routed Hendrix College 104-75 in front of the home crowd at Bill Battle Coliseum on Friday night.
The Panthers' blowout win over the Warriors was their first victory at home since beating Pensacola Christian 130-98 on Nov. 26. It was also their highest scoring game since that game against the Eagles.
After a slow start by both teams, Birmingham-Southern eventually found a rhythm in the first half and it carried over the course of the entire game. The Panthers never trailed after the 16:47 mark of the opening half and soon BSC was well out of Hendrix's reach. Never really close, BSC held an 18-point lead at the halftime break and with just over two minutes to go in regulation, amassed a 33-point lead over the Warriors.
Five different Panthers scored in the double-digits, led by senior Calvin Bak (Muscle Shoals, Ala./Muscle Shoals HS), who scored a game-high 21 points. Redshirt junior Matt Gonda (Roswell, Ga./Roswell HS) had 16 points and freshman forward Josh Childers (Madison, Ala./Westminster Christian Academy) dropped 12 points.
'Southern shot 60 percent from the field and 57 percent from beyond the arch in the game, compared to Hendrix who shot 33 and 35 percent from the field and from three.
With the win, Birmingham-Southern improves to 7-16 overall and 3-9 in the Southern Athletic Association. The Panthers will wrap up their regular season home games on Sunday against Rhodes College. Pre-game BSC will honor senior Calvin Bak.
