How it Happened

The 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's basketball team shot 56.0 percent from the field and went wire-to-wire in an 81-51 win over Washington College Saturday night in Centennial Conference action.

Hopkins jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the game's opening 74 seconds, thanks to five straight points from junior Conner Delaney. The teams then traded scores over the next nine minutes as the Blue Jay lead see-sawed up and down. Following a Patrick Devitt three at the 7:31-mark that made it a six-point game at 22-16, senior Harry O'Neil drained a three to ignite a 13-2 run. Sophomore Tom Quarry capped the run with a pair of free throws, staking Hopkins to a 35-18 lead with 3:48 to play in the half.

Derrick Carter and Daniel Brown combined for four unanswered to pull Washington College back within 13 less than two minutes later. O'Neil responded with two free throws and then Delaney beat the buzzer with a pull-up three to send Hopkins into the half with a 40-22 lead.

Brown opened the second-half scoring for the Shoremen, but the Blue Jays answered with 16-4 run to push their lead to 28 with 11:51 to go in the game. Five different Hopkins players scored during the run, capped by an O'Neil bucket in the paint. Carter scored five straight points to halt the run to trim the deficit to 23. But that's as close as Washington College would get for the remainder of the game as Hopkins lead would balloon to as much as 32.
