Robertson Trey Lifts #3 R-MC Men’s Hoops over LYN in OT

ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) nailed a three-pointer just before the buzzer in overtime to cap a career-best 18 points as the third-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team outlasted Lynchburg 85-82 on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened:

  • Junior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) scored on a follow for the first points of the game before the Hornets tallied six straight to take a 6-2 advantage. A layup by junior Terry Woods (Burlington, N.C./Burlington School) capped a 7-2 run as the Yellow Jackets took a 9-8 lead with 11:55 left in the first period. R-MC trailed 16-14 before back-to-back three-pointers by senior Corey Bays (Bel Air, Md./CM Wright) and Woods highlighted a 9-0 spurt as the home team took a 23-16 with 4:11 remaining. The Yellow Jacket defense held LYN scoreless for more than five minutes and without a field goal for nearly six minutes. A jumper by freshman Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) gave R-MC a 32-22 lead with 1:25 left. The Hornets would have the final bucket of the half as the Yellow Jackets led 32-24 at intermission. Robertson had eight points off the bench for the home team.
  • Robertson hit two free throws to start the second half before LYN used a 15-2 run to take a 39-36 advantage. A three-point play by junior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) halted the run and tied the game at 39-39 with 14:50 remaining. The Hornets led 44-42 before five points by Funderburg capped a 9-0 spurt as R-MC went up 51-44 with 9:30 left. A 7-2 run closed the deficit to two before a layup by Funderburg gave the Yellow Jackets a 55-51 advantage with 6:20 remaining. A trey by Bays gave R-MC a 60-58 edge before LYN tied it with just under two minutes left. A one-hander by Mallory put the Yellow Jackets on top 62-60 with 1:40 remaining. The Hornets scored six straight before a three-pointer by Anthony pulled R-MC within one at 66-65 with 26.3 seconds left. Following a free throw by LYN, Anthony hit a short jumper to tie the game at 67-67 with 11.9 seconds remaining. The Hornets missed a long three-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime.
  • Bays had a layup off the overtime tap and Anthony sank four free throws as the Yellow Jackets went up 73-69 with 3:39 left. LYN fought back and tied the game at 73-73. Robertson nailed a trey before a three-point play by the Hornets evened the score at 76-76 with two minutes remaining. Woods made three free throws to put R-MC on top 79-76 with 1:43 remaining. LYN hit two foul shots and had the ball before a steal by Bays led to a pair of free throws by Robertson to give the Yellow Jackets an 81-78 edge with 24.4 seconds left. The Hornets had a pair of layups sandwiched around an Anthony free throw to tie the game at 82-82 with 6.4 seconds remaining. Robertson hit a three-pointer from the right corner with 0.3 seconds left to give R-MC the thrilling victory.

By The Numbers:

  • There were 14 ties and 12 lead changes in the contest.
  • R-MC had six players score in double figures for the first time this season. Along with 18 by Robertson, Anthony added 17, Bays had 14, Funderburg had 13, Woods scored 11 and Mallory put in 10.
  • Anthony and Mallory both had six rebounds to lead the Yellow Jackets.
  • Woods had a career-high eight assists, while Mallory had a season-best five. Anthony also had five assists.
  • Mallory had all five of R-MC's blocked shots.

For The Record

  • R-MC remains the only team without a loss in ODAC play. The Yellow Jackets are 13-0 in conference contests. All other ODAC teams have at least two league losses.
  • The Yellow Jackets have won nine straight games.
  • This was the first overtime game for R-MC this season. The last overtime for the Yellow Jackets came on Jan. 16, 2019, an 87-79 victory at Bridgewater.
  • R-MC has won 19 of the past 21 meetings with LYN.
  • Lynchburg was the first team to score more than 70 points against the Yellow Jackets this season.
  • Buzz Anthony had made 28 straight free throws over the past six games before missing his final attempt of the game.
