York (Pa.) Runs Win Streak to Seven with CAC Road Win at Salisbury

SALISBURY, MD – The York College men's basketball team extended their win streak to a season high seven as they picked up a big 85-78 Capital Athletic Conference road win at Salisbury on Wednesday night. The Spartans put four players in double figures in the victory.

How It Happened:

• The two squads went back and forth early as the York led 11-10 before the first media timeout. The Sea Gulls Hit the Spartans with a 9-0 run out of the timeout to take a eight point lead with 11:15 left in the first half.

• York responded with a 10-2 run to tie the game at 21. Salisbury answered with another run, this one an 12-3 spurt to push their lead to a game-high nine at 33-24. York again answered in the game of runs with an 11-2 burst of their own, tying the game at 35. The Sea Gulls got a free throw from Gary Brindell with seven seconds left in the half to take a 36-35 advantage at the break.

• York seized control of the game after the half and used the opening ten minutes of the stanza to push out to a game-high lead of 13 points (58-45). The Sea Gulls chipped away at the Spartan lead and eventually tied the game at 70 on a Devin Garrett three-pointer at the five-minute mark. York responded with with a Logan Collins three-point play on the next possession. After York got a stop, Joe Polczynski hit a huge three pointer to quickly push the York lead back to six.

• After Garrett converted a three-point play, Polczynski cashed out another three to give York a 79-73 lead with 2:31 left in the game. Salisbury cut the York lead to four two more times over the next minute and a half but the Spartans closed out the win as Collins went 3-for-4 from the line in the final 21 seconds to account for the final margin of victory.

The Spartans completed the season sweep of the Sea Gulls as the Green and White now holds a 39-38 edge in the all-time series … York has now won five straight against Salisbury … the Spartans beat the Sea Gulls for the second time in eight days as the two teams met last Wednesday in York … York improves to 6-3 on the road … the Spartan senior class picked up their 80th win of their career … the Spartans made 13 three pointers and that's the 14th time this year that have reached double figures in three pointers made … the Spartans were great at the free throw line, making 20-of-24 for 83.3% … the 83.3% mark from the line is tied for their second best performance at the stripe for the season … the 20 makes are the second highest total of the year (26 vs. Delaware Valley) … York had just three steals which is tied for their second lowest total of the year … York had 18 assists on their 26 field goals … the Spartans shot 56% in the second half as they made 14-of-25 from the field including 6-of-10 from three … York went 16-for-19 from the line in the second half … Salisbury attempted 12 more field goals and made three more but York held a big 20-9 advantage in made free throws … Salisbury put five players in double figures … seniors Jared Wagner and Joe Polczynski tied for the team lead in scoring with 17 points each … Wagner now has 1,354 points for his career as he remains 13th on the all-time scoring list … Wagner was credited with a season-low one rebound in the win … Polczynski was one point short of tying his career high of 18 points … Polczynski has reached double figures in seven of his last nine games … he has tallied double figures 14 times during the year … freshman Logan Collins was two points short of tying his career high with his 14 points … it snapped a stretch of five games in which he didn't reach double figures … Collins now has seven double figure games for his Spartan career … senior Darin Gordon continued his hot play as he reached double figures for the fourth straight game … he now has eight double figure games … York has reached the 17-win mark for the 13th time in school history with four of those seasons coming in the last four campaigns.

The Spartans return to Charles Wolf Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon to square off against Christopher Newport in a key Capital Athletic Conference contest. The Captains enter the game riding an 11-game win streak while the Spartans are one game back in the standings with their seven-game streak. Tip time at Wolf Gymnasium is set for 4:00 pm. The Spartans will celebrate Senior Day prior to contest.
