The Oglethorpe men's basketball team led the majority of the game Sunday en route to an 83-65 rout of the homestanding Rhodes Lynx. The Stormy Petrels outscored the home side 51-37 in the second half, turning what had been a 4-point game at halftime into an easy win for the visitors. It improved Oglethorpe to 13-9 overall and 7-4 in SAA play, giving then sole possession of third place after fourth-place Berry lost at Hendrix Sunday.

With Oglethorpe up just 32-28 at the break, Rhodes found themselves in the thick of the contest after holding the Petrels to just 33.3 percent from the field over the opening 20 minutes. That all changed in the second half, however. as the Petrels shot 61.3 percent from the field and were 8-for-13 from 3-point range over the final 20 minutes. After the Lynx cut it to 32-30 with the first basket of the second half, Oglethorpe went on an 11-3 run to take a 43-33 lead with 17:25 to go. After Rhodes cut it back to 6 with 4 straight points, Oglethorpe went on a 31-12 stretch over 9:40 to build a 74-49 lead, their largest of the game, with 5:20 to go. Oglethorpe cruised to the win from there.

Rhodes took a 4-0 lead early in the first half, but the Petrels responded with an 8-0 run to take an 8-4 lead. They never trailed again, but Rhodes hung tough throughout the first half. The Petrels led by as many as 7 points in the first half, but couldn't stretch the lead like they were able to do in the second half.

Junior guard Dimetri Chambers got back on the beam after a tough game Friday against Hendrix, scoring a game-high 22 points on 8-of-14 from the field and adding three steals. Sophomore guard Carlos Sone threw in 8 points on a perfect 3-for-3 at the foul line, but added a game-high 12 rebounds and three assists. Freshman guard Justin Day came off the bench again to outstanding effect, scoring 20 points on 6-of-11 from the floor, 3-of-6 from distance, and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. 

The Petrels shot 47.5 percent from the field for the game, including a 43.5 percent mark from long distance. They forced 16 Rhodes turnovers and outscored their opponent 15-6 off them. They also outscored the Lynx 10-2 on the fast break.

"Today was a good bounceback win after a tough loss Friday night," said Oglethorpe head coach Philip Ponder. "I thought our defense was good throughout the game, and our offense finally got going in the second half."

The Petrels return to Dorough Field House Friday night, when they'll host the Sewanee Tigers on Senior Night at 8 p.m. After that, they'll welcome Centre in Sunday at 3 p.m.
