Hampden-Sydney Basketball Takes Road Win At Shenandoah 61-56

WINCHESTER, Va. -- Sophomore Jack Wyatt/Richmond scored a game-high 20 points to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 61-56 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball road win at Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon in Winchester. Senior captain Kevin Quinn/Apex, N.C. and freshman Ryan Clements/Conyers. Ga. each added 12 points, and senior Chaise Johnson/Richmond had 10 points for the visiting Tigers (13-7, 8-3 ODAC), who led 27-16 at halftime toward their fifth-straight win and 12th win in the last 14 games. Chris Oates scored 14 points for the host Hornets (6-14, 3-8 ODAC), who were within 57-56 with 3:03 remaining.

"We definitely made it interesting today," said first-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "I thought we really defended well to start the game, and they made some great adjustments at halftime that hurt us. A game we can learn from for sure. Proud of the guys for finding a way."

H-SC jumped out to a quick 8-0 advantage at 17:34 as Quinn and Johnson made three-point field goals sandwiched around a jumper by Wyatt. SU used a 7-3 run to make it 11-7 at 11:10, but the Tigers extended their lead to 19-9 with 6:56 left in the half following another three-pointer by Quinn. The Hornets made it 20-16 with 4:21 on the clock, but the visitors closed with seven unanswered points to lead 27-16 at the intermission. Wyatt (15) and Quinn (9) combined for 24 of the 27 first-half points for the Garnet & Grey.

H-SC took its largest lead of the contest at 36-21 with 15:56 remaining, courtesy of a three-pointer by Johnson, who scored five quick points to open the half. SU, however, responded with nine unanswered points to get within 36-30 at 13:44. Quinn made three free throws at 13:34 to make it 39-30, but the Hornets answered with seven-straight points to get within 39-37 at 11:18. A layup and three-pointer from Clements, who scored all 12 of his points during the second half, put the Tigers ahead 44-39 with 9:58 to play, and a three-pointer by freshman True Johnson/Bethesda, Md.—the first of his collegiate career—had the visitors in front 49-42 at 8:11. The hosts again closed and were within 51-49 at 6:26, but Clements connected on another three-pointer at 6:07 to make it 54-49. SU made yet another push and managed to make it a one-point game at 57-56 with 3:03 left to play after a three-pointer from Oates. H-SC, however, scored the final four points to secure the important road victory—getting a jumper from Wyatt at 1:42 before Johnson made two clinching free throws with just 2.1-seconds remaining.

Wyatt led H-SC with his game-high 20 points for his team-best ninth 20-point game, adding seven rebounds and two steals. Quinn and Clements each finished with their respective 12 points for the Tigers, with Quinn making 3-7 three-pointers and Clements adding nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Johnson had his 10 points, adding a career-high eight rebounds, while junior captain Jake Hahn/Ruckersville contributed four points, six rebounds and four assists. H-SC shot 37% (22-59) from the field, including 45% (9-20) on three-pointers, and 50% (8-16) at the free throw line.

Oates led SU with his 14 points, including 4-9 three-pointers. Harry Wall finished with 13 points for the Hornets, while Zach Garrett had eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds. SU shot 29% (20-70) from the field, including 26% (8-31) on three-pointers, and 89% (8-9) at the line.

H-SC returns home and is idle during the upcoming week before hosting ODAC opponent Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon, February 8, at 2 p.m. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium.
