Five Double-Figure Scorers Lead Cortland Men Past Fredonia, 82-68

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Eric Edwards (Binghamton) led five Cortland double-figure scorers with 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor as the Red Dragons defeated host Fredonia, 82-68, in SUNYAC men's basketball action.
 
Brendan Fitzpatrick (Plainview/Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK) and Jake DiSanto (Victor) each scored 15 points, Ben Walters (Lockport/Starpoint) tallied 14 points and Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) added 11 points for Cortland, which improved to 11-6 overall and 5-5 in league play. The Red Dragons finished 15-of-35 from 3-point range (43 percent), led by DiSanto at 5-for-9, Walters at 4-for-8 and Fitzpatrick at 3-for-4.
 
Grunder led Cortland with 11 rebounds and added three assists. Fitzpatrick grabbed nine rebounds and dished out six assists, while Ryan Schmadel (Oriskany) and AJ Lawton (Saratoga Springs) each finished with three assists.
 
Fredonia (7-10, 3-7 SUNYAC) also finished with five double-figure scorers. Dydy Bryan scored 12 points on 6-of-7 accuracy from the floor. Tyler Roberts netted 11 points, while De'Quan Smith, Moussa Samassa and Chad Biersbach scored 10 points each. Samassa led the Blue Devils with eight rebounds and Bryan had five assists.
 
Cortland went on a 16-6 run over the final 6:47 of the first half to take a 38-26 halftime lead. DiSanto made three 3-pointers in the first 1:12 of the second half to extend the margin to 21. Fredonia fought back to as close as 56-46 on a Smith trey with 13:02 left but never reduced Cortland's lead to single digits. The Red Dragons took their largest lead at 77-52 on a Walters 3-pointer with 7:43 left and led by at least 20 for the next four minutes. The Blue Devils finished the game on a 9-1 run to create the final margin.
 
Cortland will play at Buffalo State Saturday at 2 p.m.
