St. Louis, Mo., Jan. 26, 2020 – The No. 13-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team overcame a 17-point first-half deficit with a dominant second half in a 73-70 win over New York University Sunday at the WU Field House in St. Louis.
WashU improved to 14-2 and 5-0 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while New York dropped to 7-9 and 0-5 in the conference.
Senior forward DeVaughn Rucker just missed a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds, while junior guard Jack Nolan added 17. Sophomore guard Charlie Jacob poured in a career-high 14 points, while sophomore forward Kameron Mack added 12 points, five rebounds and a career-high three assists.
WashU shot 52.1 percent (25-48) from the field and hit 16-of-22 from the foul line.
The Bears trailed 28-11 with 8:05 to play after NYU went on a 16-0 run. The Bears were ice cold from the field and did not have a bucket for a span of 6:07.
WashU trailed 36-26 at half after shooting 43.5 percent (10-23) from the field. NYU had a 11-0 advantage in second-chance points and 10-2 in points off turnovers. Rucker led all scorers with 12 points.
Mack's three-pointer cut the lead to 40-36 with 16:28 to play, and then Jacob's jumper trimmed the advantage to 40-38. Mack hit another three to start a 10-0 run by the Bears to get the lead for good. Freshman Kevin Davet capped the run with a two-handed flush with 6:35 to play.
WashU shot 60.0 percent (15-25) from the field and hit 6-of-11 threes in the second half.
Ethan Feldman had 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, while Nick Macarchuk added 16 points on four threes. NYU outrebounded WashU 34-30 and hit just 13-of-24 from the free-throw line.
WashU hosts Rochester on Friday, Jan. 31, at 8 p.m. as part of Eliot Family Night.
