RPI Men's Winning Streak Reaches 15 Games

ITHACA, N.Y. - Sophomore Mason Memmelaar scored 20 points on 7 of 11 shooting and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team extended its winning streak to 15 games with a 72-64 victory at Liberty League foe Ithaca College. RPI improves to 15-2 overall and 10-0 in the conference, while the Bombers are now 11-4 and 7-2.

Memmelaar, a forward, scored 10 points in both halves to go with four total rebounds, a block and two steals. Classmate Dom Black added 12 points with five rebounds, while Patrick Mahoney and Kevin Davis both had 10 points. Mahoney also chipped in with six rebounds and Davis pulled down eight rebounds. Mitchel Wayand also had eight boards, along with six points and a pair of steals.

Ithaca was led by Sebastian Alderete (27 points) and Riley Thompson (20), who combined for 47 points. Skylar Sinon added 13 points.

Memmelaar opened the game by scoring RPI's first eight points and the visitors led 8-2 in the early going. Another Memmelaar layup put RPI ahead 12-7 five minutes into the game, but Aldrete scored five straight points to even the score at 12-12. The game remained close with the teams within four points until a Mahoney dunk made it a six-point game, 31-25, with 4:25 to play in the half. A layup by Mahoney at 1:45 put RPI ahead by four points, 35-31, at halftime.

The Engineers made 50 percent (15 of 30) of their shots in the first half, while holding Ithaca to 43.3 percent (13 of 30). The Bombers were 4 of 14 (28.6%) from three-point range, while RPI had the same percentage on 2 of 7 shooting.

A Kevin Davis three-pointer to start the second half put Rensselaer ahead by seven points, but the Bombers clawed back to within two points by the two-minute mark. The score remained within two possessions until RPI's Jonny Angbazo made it a seven-point difference (53-46) as part of a 12-1 run that eventually gave the Engineers a 59-46 lead with 5:22 to play. Aldrete broke the string with a three but a Mahoney tip-in pushed the margin to 12 points (61-49) with just under five minutes to play.

Down 13 points with less than three minutes to play, Ithaca scored nine straight points in about two minutes to get to within 68-64, but Memmelaar was successful on two free throws with 24 seconds left and Black followed with two of his own seven seconds later to finish the game.

RPI, which is within three victories of the school's all-time winning streak, is on the road on Friday night at Skidmore College (7:30pm). The Bombers play at Wells College on Tuesday at 7pm.
