#8 Marietta crushes Capital 75-47

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Eighth ranked Marietta College remained undefeated in Ohio Athletic Conference play with a 75-47 road win at Capital University Wednesday (Jan. 15) evening. The Pioneers improve to 13-1 overall and 7-0 in the OAC. Capital falls to 7-7 on the season and 3-4 in conference games.

"After a really frustrating first half, our guys did a great job making some adjustments and we played a phenomenal second half on both ends of the floor," Marietta head coach Jon VanderWal said. "I'm proud of how we responded and we again showed some resiliency on the road.

Mason Lydic led four Pioneers in double figures with 12 points. Mike Hall scored 11 points, while Tim Kreeger and Christian James each chipped in with 10. Kreeger grabbed nine rebounds and Caleb Hoyng pulled down eight.

The first five minutes of the game saw the teams trade baskets as Marietta led, 9-8. The early Pioneer offense came from buckets by Jason Ellis, Hall, Kreeger and James. The teams continued to go back and forth as the lead changed hands or the game was tied five times in the next five minutes of action.

The Pioneers scored back to back buckets with layups from Kreeger and Hoyng to put Marietta up 18-14. Late in the half, Capital held a 24-20 edge, but Marietta scored the final eight points of the opening period and led, 28-24, at the intermission. James and Lydic nailed three-pointers and Kreeger scored a layup as time expired in the half.

Marietta opened the second half on a 9-0 run extending the lead to 37-24 at the 16:32 mark of the period. The run was highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from Hall. After each team scored a bucket, Marietta went on an 11-0 spurt and stretched out a 50-28 lead. The run was started by a pair of layups from Ellis and capped by a three from Karson Synder.

The Pioneers maintained their lead through the middle of the second half and held a 70-46 edge with just over three minutes to play in the game. Marietta never allowed the Crusaders back into the game and won, 75-47. The Pioneers outscored Capital, 47-23 in the second half.

Marietta will return to the hardwood on Saturday (Jan. 18) when they travel to take on Ohio Northern University. Tip-off in Ada is set for 5 p.m.
