Barnette's career-high leads Covenant over LaGrange

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant men's basketball team remained unbeaten at home and in USA South play with a 76-67 win over LaGrange on Saturday afternoon from the Barnes PE Center.

Covenant improves to 8-4 overall and remains a perfect 5-0 in USA South play. The Scots are 4-0 inside Barnes PE Center on the year. LaGrange falls to 3-10 and 2-4 on the year.

Chris Barnette recorded a career-high 28 points, including 15 in the second half, on 11-of-15 shooting to go with eight rebounds. Will Crumly posted his fourth double-double on the year with 10 points to go with a team-high 11 rebounds. Crumly and Barnette led the way with five assists each. Zack Allen rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Scots with 14.

Covenant jumped out to a 14-point first half lead and never looked back. The Scots opened up the second half on a 7-2 run to reach their largest of the night as Allen hit a 3-pointer to put Covenant up 15 just under three minutes in. The Panthers answered as they trimmed the lead to five with a 10-3 run capped off by a Henry Blair layup with 12:18 to go.

Covenant would not let the guests get any closer as they held on for their third straight victory.

Allen got the scoring started just under two minutes into the game and Noah Oetjen added a triple just 41 seconds later to give the Scots a 5-0 lead to kickstart the back-and-forth first half.

LaGrange kept it close and took the lead on a Lincoln Anderson bucket with 12:33 remaining. Barnette then hit a 3-pointer to give the Scots the lead again just 21 seconds later. The Panthers answered with a Ronald Youngblood basket, and a Porter Law fastbreak layup on their next to possession to regain a two-point lead with 10:55 left in the half.

Brady Palmer gave Covenant the lead again on the next possession with a 3-pointer of his own and the Scots held the lead the rest of the game.

Anderson led the Panthers with 16 points followed by Julian Cameron with 14. Youngblood posted 12 points of his own as Kyle Brown rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10. Youngblood led the team with three steals as Youngblood and Anderson paced LaGrange on the glass with five rebounds each. Cameron led the guests with three assists.

Covenant was able to outscore LaGrange 14-6 in second-chance scoring as the Scots pulled down nine offensive rebounds and turned 10 Panther turnovers into 14 points.

Covenant won the battle on the boards, 34-31.

The Scots went 28-for-60 (46.7 percent) from the floor and hit 12-of-27 (44.4 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc, marking the second straight game in which Covenant has hit double-digit 3-pointers. Covenant shot a solid 80 percent (8-of-10) from the free-throw line.

LaGrange shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) overall but went a rugged 28.6 percent (4-for-14) from distance. The Panthers went 9-for-14 (64.3 percent) from the charity stripe.
