HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Junior Chris LaBelle recorded a triple-double to lead the Centenary University men's basketball team to a 102-83 win over Keystone College in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play. The Cyclones, who won their second straight game, scored at least 100 points for the third time this season.
LaBelle finished the game with 33 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists. The 12 assists set the school record for single-game assists.
"Chris had another great night," said interim head coach Jason Geleski. "He is very hard to guard as he is effective on all three levels and is a great free throw shooter. He's finishing really well and playing at a high level."
LaBelle was aided by three other Cyclones who all scored 14 points in the contest.
"Our team played tremendous defense tonight," added Geleski. "We dominated the boards when we needed to down the stretch. D'Angelo Blackmond was strong on the boards and Tom Weiler effectively shut down one of our conference's leading scorers when it counted."
The Cyclones quickly opened up an 8-3 lead as Weiler drained a three-pointer at 17:35.
Keystone responded by scoring 10 of the 15 points and tied the game at 13-13 with 13:57 remaining in the period. Jeremy Jordan tallied five points in that stretch.
Weiler connected on his second triple of the period at 13:10. That started a 13-5 run by the home team which gave the Cyclones a 26-18 lead with 10:42 to go until the half. Weiler had seven during that stretch while LaBelle added five.
The Cyclones and Giants and traded baskets over the next several minutes. A three-pointer from freshman Owen Roberts III and lay-up from LaBelle pushed the home team's advantage to 36-24 with 6:08 showing on the clock
Keystone cut the Centenary advantage to seven, 38-31 with 3:43 to play.
Seven straight points from the Cyclones made it a 45-31 game with 2:51 to go. LaBelle struck for the first five points of the that run.
A late basket from sophomore Billy Veras sent the Cyclones into the half with a 51-39 lead.
The Cyclones opened the second half on a 10-4 run and took a 61-43 lead with 14:52 to play in the game.
The Cyclones and Giants continued to battle on both ends of the court as a pair of free throws from LaBelle put the Cyclones on top 67-48 with 11:59 to go in the game.
Another trip to the foul line and a pair of made shots for LaBelle at 7:10 gave Centenary its largest lead of the game, 80-57.
Keystone used a 14-4 run to pull to within 13, 84-71 with 4:26 showing on the clock. Cockrell scored seven for the Giants during that run.
The two sides traded points as Cockrell sunk a pair from the charity stripe at 2:26 which made it a 91-79 contest.
Centenary went 9-for-10 from the foul line in the final two minutes to seal the 102-83 win.
The Cyclones shot 54 percent from the field and made 27-of-30 chances from the foul line. Keystone posted a 44.6 field goal percentage and was 19-for-29 from the foul line. Centenary won the rebounding battle, 42-30.
LaBelle scored 30 or more points in a game for the sixth time this season.
Veras, Weiler and Blackmond all tallied 14 points for the Cyclones. Veras and Weiler also pulled down eight rebounds each.
Cockrell led Keystone with 29 points and 11 rebounds in the contest.
Centenary wraps up a busy week when it travels to Cairn on Saturday, Jan. 11 for a 3 p.m. game.
