Triple Double by Anthony Leads #7 R-MC Men’s Hoops past LVC

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior guard Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) recorded his first collegiate triple double with 16 points, 10 assists and a career-high 11 rebounds as the seventh-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team defeated Lebanon Valley 94-56 in the first round of the 2019 R-MC Coaches Tournament sponsored by Fink's Jewelers on Sunday afternoon in Crenshaw Gym.

How it Happened:

  • Seniors Corey Bays (Bel Air, Md./CM Wright) and Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) sank three-pointers to start the scoring for the Yellow Jackets, giving them a lead they would not relinquish. After a pair of buckets by the Flying Dutchmen, freshman Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti has two baskets to cap a 7-0 run as R-MC took a 13-4 advantage with 15:35 left in the first half. Following two layups by LVC, Anthony hit three shots to spark a 9-3 spurt as the home team went up 24-11 with 11:20 remaining. The Yellow Jackets hit 10 of their first 14 field goal attempts (71.4%). R-MC would hit eight of their next nine buckets from behind the arc in building a 24-point advantage at 47-23 with four minutes left. Mallory would tally the final four points of the period as the Yellow Jackets took a 50-27 lead to the locker room at the break. R-MC shot 50% from the floor (19-38) and 50% on three-pointers (11-22) against the LVC zone. The Yellow Jackets had an 18-2 edge in points off turnovers. Sophomore Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) hit four treys to lead R-MC with 12 points, while Bays, Anthony and Mallory all tallied nine. Anthony had seven assists and six rebounds.
  • Freshman Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) nailed a three-pointer to cap a 12-6 start to the second half as the Yellow Jackets led 62-33 with 14:40 left in the contest. Back-to-back treys by Anthony and Bays pushed the advantage to 32 at 78-46 with 8:20 remaining. The R-MC defense held LVC without a field goal over the final 6:40. The Yellow Jackets finished the game on a 16-6 run, with seven coming from Talbert, as a trey by sophomore Bradley Thomasson (Richmond, Va./Godwin) capped the scoring and gave the victors their largest lead in a 94-56 victory.

By The Numbers:

  • The Yellow Jackets had five score in double figures. Anthony led with way with 16, while Talbert tallied 14, Mallory added 13, and Robertson and Bays both had a dozen.
  • R-MC won the battle of the boards 44-23. Anthony had 11 and Mallory grabbed eight to pace the Yellow Jackets. R-MC had a 21-2 advantage in second-chance points.
  •  The Yellow Jackets had 25 assists and just nine turnovers. R-MC forced 21 turnovers and Anthony had four of his team's 14 steals.

For The Record

  • R-MC won its first 10 games of the season for the seventh time in program history and for the second consecutive season.
  • Anthony is the 12th player in NCAA Division III this season to record a triple double.
  • R-MC had five score in double figures for the second time this season. In the 84-40 win at St. Mary's (Md.) in the second game of the season, Bays had 18, Mallory 14, Robertson 13, junior Terry Woods (Burlington, N.C./Burlington School) 12 and Anthony 11.
  • The 94 points by the Yellow Jackets were their second-highest point total of the season. R-MC scored 97 at home against Bridgewater.
  • R-MC set season highs with 79 field goal attempts, 19 three-point field goals made, 48 three-point attempts and 14 steals.
